About the Author
Sunggu Lee received the B.S.E.E. degree with highest distinction from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in 1985 and the M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1987 and 1990, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Pohang, Korea. Prior to this appointment, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, U.S.A. From June 1997 to June 1998, he spent one year as a Visiting Scientist at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. His research interests are in parallel computing using clusters, fault-tolerant computing, and real-time computing.

poor langugee and critical errors

This book presents some good materials. Two big designs can be used with some careful. The language used is poor. The language structure is confusing and the user might need to read a paragraph several times to understand the Author. I think some of the materials were translated from another language to English without any thought.

There are some critical design errors. For example he uses this equation to detect an overflow when he treats the THUMB cpu: V_Flag

Highly Stylized - love at first sight

HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE!! There are small leaflets with photos of his work from beginning to end and information about them all. The "box" it came in was highly stylized that I fell in love with the detailed die cut organic pattern that covers Sagmeister's face. I'm so happy to add this to my collection of designer books that I use for references over and over again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Writing an in-depth review seems like it would be doing it an injustice because part of the fun of any Sagmeister book is opening the packaging and seeing the clever ways in which he presents the content. But then, Sagmeister wouldn't be who he is if he didn't brilliantly present the messages he wants you to take away. If you love his work, get this book. It will not disappoint you. If you are a student interested in his work, get this book. The information is easy to digest, and you'll appreciate all the care and planning that went into creating this beautiful volume of work.

About the Author
Simon Sebag Montefiore was born in 1965 and read history at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge University. Catherine the Great & Potemkin was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson, Duff Cooper, and Marsh Biography Prizes. Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar won the History Book of the Year Prize at the British Book Awards. Young Stalin won the Costa Biography Award (UK), the LA Times Book Prize for Biography (US), Le Grand Prix de la Biographie Politique (France) and the Kreisky Prize for Political Literature (Austria). He lives with his wife, the novelist Santa Montefiore, and their two children in London.

Important speeches, some great

This book contains 48 speeches, or excerpts from speeches (mostly the latter). It starts with Moses (with the ten commandments, which is not actually a speech) and ends with George W. Bush. Each of the 48 sections contains a picture of the speaker (or representation for those for whom no likeness is known), a brief biography of the speaker and the context of the speech. Unfortunately, in most cases the complete speech is not provided, only excerpts are presented. The choice of the speeches appears to be their historical importance, not their quality. As such, many are interesting, but far from memorable. Some are, however, powerful, very moving and worth the price of the book. I place the examples of the speeches given by FDR, Churchill, JFK, Martin Luther King and Elie Wiesel to be is this latter category. In this regard, the "I have a Dream" speech given by Martin Luther King stands far above all the others, even when the others include the likes of Churchill and John F. Kennedy.

I only have two complaints (in addition to the fact that only excerpts are given from most of the speeches). Except for the last speech (that given by George W. Bush after 9/11) the author (when it was not the speaker) is not given. The second criticism stems from the fact that the book was prepared in Great Britain and there is a certain lack of knowledge of US history. The president to succeed Woodrow Wilson was Warren Harding, not Warren Hardy. All in all, this is mostly a history book, rather than one on rhetoric.

Flawed history

The book is a nice collection of famous or near famous speeches. The major flaw of the book is Mr. Montefiore's personal grasp of history. His comments introducing the speeches are badly flawed in a number of places. He states that the Revolutionary War lasted 6 years. It lasted 8 years (1775 - 1783). He gives Napoleon a reason for escaping from Elba -- he was "Alarmed for the safety of his wife and son in France...." No where in any historical writing has this fact come out. Napoleon wanted to regain the power he once had. Under Hitler he states "April, by which time Hitler had survived various assassination plots by his own countrymen......". There was only one assassination plot that came to fruition. Under Churchill he states that Churchill was "Elected Prime Minister in 1940......". There was no election. It was an arrangement between the political powers in England at the time. Under Franklin D. Roosevelt there are two flaws. With respect to Roosevelt's inclinations in the early years of WW II -- "Initially determined to keep America out of the conflict, Roosevelt nevertheless....." Finally, Mr. Montefiore states that "....American spies indicated that Japanese naval forces were moving towards the oil-rich East Indies and Malaya. Reports that aircraft carriers were heading towards Hawaii were not taken seriously." In the first instance the reports of the Japanese task forces heading south were reported by a number of various sources, none of which were "American spies". Secondly American intelligence had lost sight of the Japanese carrier forces and reported them to be in the Inland Sea of Japan. There were NO reports of approaching carriers before the attack Dec. 7, 1941.

I constantly return to it as a reference to speeches delivered by speakers from Oppenheimer to Stalin. With so many copies available for such a small price, this would be a great addition to your coffee table--no matter how you take it. On the other hand, it is not authoritative, really, just good for some fun and afternoon inspiration.

Extraordinary

Charles Jackson crafted an extraordinary debut novel, headlong and horrifying, in THE LOST WEEKEND. Its 248 pages of text recount five days in the drinking life of a thirtyish upper-middle-class New Yorker, Don Birnam, in 1936. Birnam adroitly shucks off his brother and girlfriend in favor of holing up alone and drinking, accompanied by his sizeable library of recorded classics. When he is forced to go outside to look for more money and more booze, he falls down a staircase and winds up in the hospital, which only partially dries him out before sending him home. The sequence of Don's looking for a pawnshop, not realizing it is Yom Kippur when most of the Second Avenue pawnshops are closed, is one of the most graphic in the book. Told almost entirely in interior monologue, it creates sympathy for a character who is hitting new lows in his life yet dealing with the tragedy not only with alarm and self-pity but also with humor and a strange kind of bravery.

THE LOST WEEKEND was published in 1944, more than fifteen years before the movie THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES was made and helped solidify the shift in medicine and psychology to a view of alcoholism as disease rather than moral weakness. In this, the book is well ahead of its time. Don seems to suffer from an ongoing inferiority complex paradoxically coupled with feelings of superiority. His father left the family when he was a little boy. He was groomed for success and given the European "grand tour" common to the elite of his generation, yet never fulfilled his promise. In college, Don develops a gay "crush" on an upperclassman in his fraternity, writes a passionate letter to him, is found out and is kicked out. (The 1945 movie starring Ray Milland tamped down any mention of homosexuality in favor of "writer's block," but in 1946 Jackson dealt with the topic at greater length in his novel THE FALL OF VALOR.)

The prose style in this first-person narrative is highly developed and that alone qualifies THE LOST WEEKEND as a modern classic. Birnam couples childhood reveries with a desperate search for the factors that led him into alcoholism; when he is lusting for a drink the interior monologue seems to pick up speed, much as a movie would go into an accelerated montage to heighten tension. But the book conveys nuance and insight to a much greater degree than even the popular movie can. Don's psychological introspection is mixed with the kind of horrors that an advanced alcoholic can expect to experience: hallucinations, delirium tremens, and the like. THE LOST WEEKEND is a highly recommended book, all the more so because actual alcoholic writers like Sinclair Lewis and Kingsley Amis have praised it for its realism. The Introduction by Blake Bailey is well worth reading before or after the main text and will not spoil the plot. In fact, Bailey in the Spring of 2013 gave us a wonderful biography of Jackson, Farther and Wilder: The Lost Weekends and Literary Dreams of Charles Jackson.

Powerful and Unforgettable

Just finished "The Lost Weekend" (1944), by Charles Jackson, set in 1936 in New York City.
A more harrowing and shocking journey one could hardly desire, and a more important piece of forgotten
mid-century American literature might never be unearthed. Much more than the story of five days in the
tortured life of an alcoholic at bottom, and much more than the multi-award winning movie of the same name,
(made almost immediately after this runaway best-seller), the book demonstrates erudition, sophistication, and stylistic
powers far above most contemporary writing, then or now. Once you start reading you simply cannot stop:
for the narrative itself becomes as addicting and overwhelming to the reader as the alcohol is to the protagonist.

The Lost Weekend by Charles Jackson is a total masterpiece. It's such a shame he is not better known. A story about 5 days in the life of alcoholic Don Birnam as he lies, cheats, and steals to get his booze. Some really, really great scenes in this book, like when he attempts to steal a purse from a nightclub, or desperately walking the streets of New York City looking for an open pawn shop to sell his typewriter. But I don't want to ruin the story for you. An absolute must read!

Revelation's Hymns examines the hymnic pericopes in Revelation in light of the cosmic conflict theme. It considers this theme as integral to the development of Revelation's plot. Recognizing that critical studies give interpretative primacy to the political realities that existed at the time of Revelation's composition, Grabiner responds to the need for an examination of the storyline from the perspective of issues that are of narrative importance.

Grabiner argues that the cosmic conflict is at the centre of the book's concerns, and attempts to determine the function of the hymns with respect to this. Previous examinations of the hymns have considered them as a response and/or parody to Roman liturgy, examples of God's unquestioned sovereignty, or expressions of thematic overtones found throughout the book. While these approaches make a contribution to a greater understanding of the hymns, the relation to the ever-present conflict theme has not been explored. This study allows the hymnic sections to engage with the larger narrative issue as to who is truly the rightful sovereign of the universe.

A Well-written Dissertation That Deserves The Attention of The Chosen Few

Gentle Reader, this book, Revelation's Hymns, was not written with you in mind. It is a doctoral dissertation and it was written to persuade a doctrinal committee that the author had entirely researched his thesis. It is, in my opinion, a very well written, well researched, dissertation. But it also reads just like a dissertation. The implied reader (IR) has a thorough knowledge of Greek and the Old and New Testament, especially the book of Revelation and all recent scholarship. Almost no background to any of Professor Grabiner's argument is provided because his assumption is the (IR) implied reader already knows. I am very familiar with the book of Revelation. Yet I spent a good deal of time reading Revelation as I read Revelation's Hymns. I had to. Lacking the requisite scholastic background the casual reader will be inclined to put the book down and not pick it up again.

There is a reason why no one has looked before into the Cosmic Conflict in Revelation's hymns. It is not obviously there. The hymns are obviously about God's Sovereignty. If you want to find the Cosmic Conflict in Revelation's hymns as it relates to the fitness of God as Sovereign you have to arrive there by implication. The crux of Grabiner's dilemma is summed up on page forty; "The narrative also hints at Satan's primordial background." He then footnotes G.B. Caird: "however... 'the Bible knows nothing of the premundane fall of Satan'." However indeed.

The ἀποκάλυψις will not submit to timelines. You can try to stick one on, but it always falls off. Nobody has come up with the right glue. In summation: The Book of Revelation has The Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. Grabiner imposes sequencing on the text. He doesn't discover sequence in the text. He has lots of company. It isn't necessarily bad scholarship. But it does result in two-hundred and twenty-six pages of 'hints' 'implies' and 'alludes.'

Narrative Criticism - "It may be considered strange or anachronistic to apply modern literary-critical techniques to a text that is foundational for religious faith." (page 14) It may be and it is; but it has the virtue of being arguable. Arguing what the book of Revelation says is a lot easier than arguing what it means. Still, it is strange to read about the plot, motif, lief motif, dramatis personae, cameo appearances and the characters in the storyline. Satan is a character. Now that could be taken out of context. You get used to it and it isn't a pointless hermeneutic. Anything that makes the dissertation defensible is far from pointless. But this is not how William Miller studied the Book of Revelation.

Grabiner consistently points out the overwhelming "Jewishness" of Revelation and effectively argues against the more common interpretations of the hymns which look to secular, contemporary Roman events, to make sense of what John of Patmos is writing about. The centrality of the temple and the sanctuary and the heavenly throne room, rather than political and social realities of John's day are truly the interpretive keys.

If Grabiner's thesis defense has a weakness it is a tendency to impose on the hymns the Cosmic Conflict interpretation overlooking the simpler, more obvious, interpretation that God is absolutely Sovereign. Not that Grabiner has much choice, you got to do what you got to do, but I sometimes thought the point of the hymn was the Sovereignty of God, not the worthiness of God to be Sovereign. The only reason he sees the Cosmic Conflict in the text is because his thesis forces him to see something that isn't there; it can only be implied.

From the narrative critical perspective I think the text makes Satan a relatively flat character. Grabiner needs more a dynamic Satan to defend his thesis to substantiate the conflict - so he infers from the text some things that are far from obvious. Perhaps his inferences are correct - he didn't get them from the text.

In any case, the saints in Revelation are busy overcoming something. It ain't Imperial Rome. The Lamb is not a flat character. King of Kings and Lord of Lords, a vesture dipped in blood. He leads the armies of heaven. He is in Conflict with the old Serpent the Devil about something. The Conflict is undoubtedly of Cosmic dimensions and I have no better explanation than Grabiner's. I recommend his book to everyone. Ha ha ha. Everyone with enough background to make it readable. Professor Grabiner writes well. He has done everything he can to help you Gentle Reader. But Revelation's Hymns remains a dissertation. Let the unimplied reader (UIR) beware.
