Current, well-written textbook
By Roxy
Current, well-written textbook - very detailed. Would be better if came in a softcover and had smaller print in order to save paper and reduce the list price.

Kotch
By Jena R.
So I bought the second edition, because the third edition just came out-- and it is still selling for full price. And unfortunately, the money I saved, hasn't been helping my grade, because there are so many new chapters in the third edition. Test taking has been a challenge w/o the additional information. So if you are required to have the 3rd edition, get it, because the second edition is lacking a lot. But the book arrived quickly and in good condition.

Art in Renaissance Italy (4th Edition), by John T. Paoletti, Gary M. Radke

Art mattered in the Renaissance... People expected painting, sculpture, architecture, and other forms of visual art to have a meaningful effect on their lives,” write the authors of this introduction to Italian Renaissance art.

A glance at the pages of Art in Renaissance Italy shows at once its freshness and breadth of approach, which includes thorough explanation into how and why works of art, buildings, prints, and other forms of visual production came to be. The authors also discuss how men and women of the Renaissance regarded art and artists, why works of Renaissance art look the way they do, and what this means to us. Unlike other books on the subject, this one covers not only Florence and Rome, but also Venice and the Veneto, Assisi, Siena, Milan, Pavia, Padua, Mantua, Verona, Ferrara, Urbino, and Naples—each governed in a distinctly different manner, every one with individual, political, and social structures that inevitably affected artistic styles. Spanning more than three centuries, the narrative brings to life the rich tapestry of Italian Renaissance society and the art that is its enduring legacy. Throughout, special features, including textual sources from the period and descriptions of social rituals, evoke and document the people and places of this dynamic age.

From Library Journal
This fine work by Paoletti and Radke (art history, Wesleyan Univ. and Syracuse Univ., respectively) is wide in scope, covering the years from 1300 to the late 1500s, and purposely opens discussion to include many major Italian cities, in response to Vasari's bias solely for Florence. Whereas other books are organized by time (Frederick Hartt's History of Italian Renaissance Art, Abrams, 1994. 4th ed.), by artists (Sydney J. Freedberg's Painting in Italy, Yale Univ., 1992. o.p.), or by patronage (Alison Cole's Virtue and Magnificence, Abrams, 1995), this book's essence is the relationships among artist, art, location, and public. Other recent books have used this focus, but Paoletti and Radke manage a more adroit presentation. Primary source material is interspersed throughout the text to set concepts in their historic framework. Appendixes, including city maps, ruling genealogies, and artist's biographies, are constructive. Highly suitable as an introductory text, this is an excellent choice for public libraries.?Nadine Dalton Speidel, Cuyahoga Cty. P.L., Parma, Ohio

Key Benefit: This book accounts the art and artists of Italy during the time period from the mid-thirteenth century to c. 1600. Key Topics: Unlike similar books, which tend to overemphasize Florentine art, this book introduces new material and more extensive discussion of artists from Milan, Venice, Naples and other regions, in addition to coverage of the innovations and critical importance of Florentine art. The authors consider the times, places and conditions in which artists worked in concert with issues of style, thus broadening the scope of coverage to include the dynamics of interaction between artist and patron; artist and topological tradition.

A must for any artist!
By Roy G. Varn
This book is far and above what I had expected. Emphasis was placed on being user friendly, which is paramount with such a heavy topic. Side bars on the inner political, religious, and general public life help to clarify what influenced the artist in making choices of subject, style, and composition. I now have a clearer understanding of why I paint how I do, and why we as a culture critique art the way we do.

Beautiful and Informatiive
By Anissa
I had to purchase this book for an Italian Renaissance Art class, and initially I did not want to do this as it was only a general education class and had nothing to do with my major.

Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. This book offers plenty of historical context to the art pieces including the why patrons commissioned certain types of art, why artists were motivated to create specific works and what the benefits (and drawbacks) were for them. I am not very good at history and have never studied art in my life but this book was absolutely fantastic. There are full-color reproductions of many famous works of art (if it's in Italy and you can think of it, it is in this book) and many lesser-known ones.

As far as textbooks go, and while I wish that in general they were cheaper, I think this one is a relatively fair price. It hurt to shell out $80 or so for this when I bought it, but I have to say I won't be reselling it. It has definitely been a book to pop open when I'm in the mood.

Everything from the photos to the commentary in this book is interesting and it was truly a pleasure to read. There is SO much context provided and if you ever want an overview of what we generally think of as the "Renaissance," and the art that was produced during that time, this is the book to purchase.

Brilliant! But I just have one suggestion for a dream fifth edition
By Simon Esposito
The other reviews are spot-on, and all I can add is one suggestion for how I think the book could be improved.

The choice of works for discussion and reproduction is excellent (as is the quality of the reproductions), but I wish there could have been room for maybe half a dozen more key works to be reproduced full-page, or even in double-page size. For example, Fra Angelico's fresco 'The Annunciation' appears much too small to appreciate the subtleties of the depiction of Gabriel and Mary. Fra Lippi's 'Adoration' and Uccello's 'Battle of San Romano' suffer a lot, too. I want to be saved from having to buy separate prints of these works!

This weekend at the urging of my sister, who has been using this book for several months and has FABULOUS skin (even though she's stopped using commercial products and going for facials) I followed Pratima's advice for 2 nights. First I should say i use expensive cleansers and have expensive facials. And I could not believe how my skin looked when i went to bed, just from following her advice. It looked like it did in my early 20's on the 2nd night - no joke (I'm 36)! The lines on my forehead had become barely noticeable, even to me, and my makeup went on very smoothly. Just want to say for the reviewers who complain that her commercial products have additives and chemicals - many of those chemicals might have been extracted from the foods you're using at home. Second, if she didn't add preservatives, they wouldn't last more than a few days and would have to be kept in the refrigerator, not on the shelf. It's unfortunate that if you want convenience you have to put up with the additives. If you have the time, and this book, you don't have to.

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari

New York Times Bestseller

A Summer Reading Pick for President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg

From a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.”

One hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited Earth. Yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. What happened to the others? And what may happen to us?

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Dr. Harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. We are acquiring the ability to design not only the world around us, but also ourselves. Where is this leading us, and what do we want to become?

Featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of Jared Diamond, James Gleick, Matt Ridley, Robert Wright, and Sharon Moalem.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for February 2015: Yuval Noah Harari has some questions. Among the biggest: How did Homo sapiens (or Homo sapiens sapiens , if you’re feeling especially wise today) evolve from an unexceptional savannah-dwelling primate to become the dominant force on the planet, emerging as the lone survivor out of six distinct, competing hominid species? He also has some answers, and they’re not what you’d expect. Tackling evolutionary concepts from a historian’s perspective, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, describes human development through a framework of three not-necessarily-orthodox “Revolutions”: the Cognitive, the Agricultural, and the Scientific. His ideas are interesting and often amusing: Why have humans managed to build astonishingly large populations when other primate groups top out at 150 individuals? Because our talent for gossip allows us to build networks in societies too large for personal relationships between everyone, and our universally accepted “imagined realities”--such as money, religion, and Limited Liability Corporations—keep us in line. Who cultivated whom, humans or wheat?. Wheat. Though the concepts are unusual and sometimes heavy (as is the book, literally) Harari’s deft prose and wry, subversive humor make quick work of material prone to academic tedium. He’s written a book of popular nonfiction (it was a bestseller overseas, no doubt in part because his conclusions draw controversy) landing somewhere in the middle of a Venn diagram of genetics, sociology, and history. Throughout, Harari returns frequently to another question: Does all this progress make us happier, our lives easier? The answer might disappoint you. --Jon Foro

From the Back Cover

One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism? And what will our world be like in the millennia to come?

In Sapiens, Professor Yuval Noah Harari spans the whole of human history, from the very first humans to walk the earth to the radical—and sometimes devastating—breakthroughs of the Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific Revolutions. Drawing on insights from biology, anthropology, paleontology, and economics, and incorporating full-color illustrations throughout the text, he explores how the currents of history have shaped our human societies, the animals and plants around us, and even our personalities. Have we become happier as history has unfolded? Can we ever free our behavior from the legacy of our ancestors? And what, if anything, can we do to influence the course of the centuries to come?

Bold, wide-ranging, and provocative, Sapiens integrates history and science to challenge everything we thought we knew about being human: our thoughts, our actions, our heritage...and our future.

The Broad Sweep Of Human History
By John D. Cofield
A standard history of the human race begins with Paleolithic proto-humans, traces the development of modern man or homo sapiens sapiens, then chronicles the beginnings and expansions of human civilization from agriculture to the present. Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens follows that path, but with several intriguing twists. The result is a fascinating book which will challenge pre-conceptions and occasionally annoy or even anger the reader, but will always intrigue.

Harari focusses on the three great revolutions of human history: Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific. He asks how "An Animal of No Significance" managed to become the dominant life form, and whether that animal's learning to produce his own food and then to further harness the natural world to his will through science were boons or setbacks, both for that animal and for the rest of the biosphere. In 20 brilliant chapters Harari asks his readers to consider not only what did happen, but what might have occurred had things turned out slightly differently (the roles of chance and accident are given a lot of attention.) He reveals the mutually agreed upon "stories" that helped shape human societies and questions their validity, not to disillusion but to challenge his readers. At times the tone is unavoidably cynical, but at others there's a real optimistic air (leavened by some cautions here and there). I found Harari's ideas fascinating, especially those in his final chapter "The End of Homo Sapiens" and in his brief but important "Afterword: The Animal That Became a God."

Readers who are looking for detailed chronicles listing, for example, the Emperors of China, Kings and Queens of England, or Presidents of the United States should look elsewhere. But readers who want to be challenged and enlightened will find Sapiens a most enjoyable work. I'm a retired AP World History teacher, and while I was reading there were many moments which made me wish I was back in the classroom so I could share Harari's ideas with my high school students. That's high praise indeed, but Sapiens deserves it and much more.

Masterpiece! Our myths make us who we are
By Gary
This book is a masterpiece. I feel fortunate that I discovered it before most other people. I discovered it by reading an extremely negative review for this book in the Wall Street Journal written by a historian. (In his defense, he just didn't understand that this is not a history book, and he had no idea what Harari is getting at).

This book never stops in challenging my understanding of our place in the universe. What we believe in determines what we want to want. Sapiens are distinguished by our ability to believe in fictions. The cognitive revolutions starts with the first set of hypothetical stories we allow ourselves to believe in whether they are true or not. The real importance is that the family, kin, friends, and community share those beliefs.

Our fictions allow us to cooperate. They gives us the imaginary order that is necessary for societies to act together. Corporations are not people, they do not exist in reality. One can not point to a corporation. It's not the buildings, or the executives or any other physical entities that make the corporation, but it is our belief that makes them real. The author notes that the word for corporation comes from the Latin, corpus, the same as in the body (corpus) of Christ within the transubstantiation.

Religion gives us comfort from the absurd and comforts us to accept death. Science (and its offshoot, technology) does the opposite. It gives us knowledge leading to life extension and makes our time alive more comfortable. The Gilgamesh Project of life extension is a major character is this book.

The myths we create can never be logically consistent without contradictions. Perfect liberty will always conflict with perfect equality. Knowledge about the real world can never be 'universal, necessary, and certain', but we only get glimpses of reality by considering the 'particular, contingent, and probable'. Our myths give us comfort and subjective well being, but they are never without contradictions.

The acceptance of our myths give us our commonality. He'll even say that because of the myths we choose to believe in they determine our progress. When cultures (imaginary orders) collectively know Truth, they have no reason to proceed. Biology enables us, cultures forbid us. The most important words necessary for progress are "I don't know, but I want to find out". He connects Imperialism with Capitalism leading to seeking knowledge (and developing science). Only those who do not believe they know everything need to search.

If I were to have ever written a book (which fortunately for the reading public, I save all my writing only for book reviews!) this is the book I would have written. I believe this will be a classic in the future and am glad I discovered it. The author has written this book to make sure we do everything in our power to understand that the things we believe in will determine who we will be going forward. The myths we choose to believe in will determine what we become.

By Will Coddingtgon
As someone who is very intrigued by the history of humans at the edge of evolution, I was so excited to begin this book. The first 50 pages fulfilled my expectations but after that Harari's opinions and the book's chronological meanderings began to confuse fact from fiction. Many segments could have been removed to improve cohesion and focus. I continued lackadaisically through 300 pages before putting it down. Overall Harari's yearning for the "idyllic" hunter-gatherer lifestyle overshadowed his potential ability to tell the incredible story of how we came to be.

An Introduction to the Mathematics of Biology: with Computer Algebra Models, by Edward K. Yeargers, James V. Herod, Ronald W. Shonkweiler

Biology is a source of fascination for most scientists, whether their training is in the life sciences or not. In particular, there is a special satisfaction in discovering an understanding of biology in the context of another science like mathematics. Fortunately there are plenty of interesting (and fun) problems in biology, and virtually all scientific disciplines have become the richer for it. For example, two major journals, Mathematical Biosciences and Journal of Mathematical Biology, have tripled in size since their inceptions 20-25 years ago. The various sciences have a great deal to give to one another, but there are still too many fences separating them. In writing this book we have adopted the philosophy that mathematical biology is not merely the intrusion of one science into another, but has a unity of its own, in which both the biology and the math ematics should be equal and complete, and should flow smoothly into and out of one another. We have taught mathematical biology with this philosophy in mind and have seen profound changes in the outlooks of our science and engineering students: The attitude of "Oh no, another pendulum on a spring problem!," or "Yet one more LCD circuit!" completely disappeared in the face of applications of mathematics in biology. There is a timeliness in calculating a protocol for ad ministering a drug.

Review

"A very well balanced combination of biology and mathematics. Mathematics students have an opportunity to learn enough biology to make good models, and biology students will see it as an opportunity to understand the dynamics of a biological system. It can serve as the source of many good models with possible applications in different areas of biological research." ―Gen. Physiol. Biophysics

"The title is a good description of this introductory textbook, which integrates quite nicely biology and mathematics… Each chapter ends with questions for discussion and references pointing to further reading… Intended for biology students with one year of calculus who want an introduction to mathematical modeling and for mathematics students with little knowledge of biology who want to become familiar with biological applications. The book succeeds at both intents. It is an excellent appetizer." ―Zentralblatt MATH

About the Author
After the first book appeared in 1880, Joel Chandler Harris was deluged with letters from readers all over the country asking for more stories of Brer Rabbit and his friends--so for the remaining years of his life he collected and wrote them. Richard Chase, noted folklorist and author of Jack Tales and Grandfather Tales, compiled and edited the volume after Harris s death, and his occasional footnotes and word definitions contribute to our understanding of the dialect. Chase s belief in the importance of folktales and Harris s work is summed up in his foreword: "These tales grew up in the soil of our nation. They came from the soul of a people. They endure."

Great book on Japanese acupuncture.
By JoelgSDCA
pros...this was one of the books that really gives a good insight into the world of Japanese/Meridian acupuncture. For those of you out there, there are different styles of acupuncture in the world. Japanese or Meridian acupuncture is more based on the very classic Chinese acupuncture. Most schools here in the US teach a very different style of acupuncture, called Zang/fu which is more based on organs and has a Chinese herbal slant. While the Japanese or Meridian style is based on meridians or lines of energy vs. the organs.

But you can't go wrong with this book, with either style of acupuncture you do. Well at least if you are a pragmatist like myself. I like to find the good and useful and integrate it into my treatment style. I find that the point location and point combinations are very different from Zang fu style acupuncture. Of course if you understand what I'm talking about then I hope you can appreciate the knowledge that is stored in the book. And they have really cool and memorable drawings in the book which help with understanding the concepts.

cons...not much. Sometimes a bit difficult to get, but well worth the price and the knowledge inside. Lots of clinical pearls of wisdom inside.

Unique and useful
By Amazon Customer
Good information that is not available in other books. In his first look my husband found a solution for a client with a very unusual problem who had not been helped by any other methods. Maybe that was a fluke but it was a tremendous help for this particular person, and worth the investment for her even if nothing else comes of reading it -- but we have high hopes.

By Amazon Customer
For me, are very good book, but you need in first step read or study some classic books or your school need to pass the basic, in my opinion. Really I saw the "classical in action", but the contet required a lot of time to study and think and surch in classic books.

It's very simple form, but requer to keep up your knowledge.

The Strait Gate: A Missing Metaphor in Today's Church, by Roger Magnuson

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” —Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:13–14) The modern church is at a crossroads. The superhighway looks promising, well-paved, broad, and safe. Next to it, the narrow road looks as outmoded as the winding, high-hedged ways that crisscross Wales. Quaint, but uncomfortable—and altogether too risky. But God’s ways are not our ways, nor his thoughts our thoughts. And unless believers rediscover the unsparing lesson of the strait gate, they will discover that the comforts of fellowship with the “many” have been bought at the price of the fires of hell. . . . The burden of this book is that the modern church has been diverted through a wide gate onto a broad way, whose comforts belie a catastrophic destination. If its message is severe, its way seems strait, the reader is asked to consider whether its message is more severe, or its way more strait, than the words of Jesus.
