The Best Pin-Up Book Ever

Gil Elvgren was the best of all the pin-up artists and also the most prolific and this book collects much of his work. The plates, nearly six hundred of them, are almost all in color and each one is of decent size. This book is the definitive volume on pin-up art to any collection, his art, a masterwork on the same level as any of the great painters. The fashions on his models may change throughout the forties, fifties and sixties, but their beauty (and cuteness) remain consistent. His fleshtones are truly amazing and the poses suggestive and fun. Elvgren's models weren't just gorgeous, they were friendly, inviting and playful. Just having this book lifts your mood, recalling an earlier time when life was a lot simpler.

Beautiful Girls

Beautiful Girls, in sexy poses though by no means trashy. There are too many to call my favorite, though if I had to pick one, it would either be "Jeepers Peepers," "Oh No!," or "Best Foot Forward." The reference photos are very interesting, though they're rare and far in between. The only thing that could be better are full page illustrations whereas most of the pictures are small and crammed on the page with 3 or 4 others.

Nice book for a reference collector.

I love this book because of the beautiful images. I'm an Artist and use the images as reference for designs, or inspiration for paintings. Yes it's possible to simply print out these images but I prefer to have them all together in a quality bound with the bio of the artwork. Looks attractive on my shelf at home.

"Essential Skills for a Medical Teacher provides a concise introduction to the field of medical education and is a practical guide underpinned by educational models and theory which are introduced alongside each section. The book covers what constitutes a ‘good’ medical teacher, outcome-based education, organizing a learning programme, and methods of teaching and assessment in medical education.

The overarching feel of the book is that it offers a sensible hands-on manual supported with an evidence base. It is not packed full of jargon and educational concepts are described simply. It is clear and concise throughout and it is easy to see how the authors’ tips, which ooze experience, could be translated into practice.

A whistle-stop tour of each topic is provided, giving adequate information in most places for the novice. At some points there is a feeling of a need for slightly more information but instead of clogging this introductory book, at all points the authors direct the reader to other resources. Each chapter ends with a reflection section which encourages the reader to actively reflect on his/her own practice as a teacher and this can be used as a powerful self-evaluation resource.

The book is perfectly suited to those just getting involved in medical education at more than just a basic level and would complement those beginning to undertake study in this field, such as a postgraduate certificate in medical education. I will certainly be using it when I begin mine."

"I am pleased to be able to review the book, Essential Skills for a Medical Teacher: An Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Medicine. It was a very enjoyable and informative reading adventure. The book is introduced with the basic premise that teaching is ‘‘a craft and a science,’’ and that through gaining a deeper understanding of their ‘‘work’’ all teachers can improve ‘‘from poor to good’’ or from ‘‘good to excellent’’ (page xix). With this in mind, I read the book with three sets of eyes: those of the novice or new instructor; of the clinician with some teaching experience, but little formal training in teaching; and, finally, with the eyes of an experienced instructor with training in medical education, the proficient or expert educator.

In summary I felt that, Essential Skills for a Medical Teacher: An Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Medicine fulfills its mission to provide an excellent introduction as a well as a resource for advanced study. Harden and Laidlaw provide a common language and set of principles that should be as useful within chiropractic education as it is for education in other health professions. Read it to expand your own skills or, even better, read it with your colleagues to magnify the positive impact on chiropractic education."

"I would definitely recommend this book, especially to any people just setting out in medical education. The book's strengths are that it is an excellent first book for medical education. It is easy-to-read and to find the right areas within it, in fact it is easier to look in this book and find a subject area and then look up the listed 'further reading' suggestions than it is to look in more comprehensive texts. This book covers all the basic requirements of an educator setting out and has lots of ideas and tips to ensure the educator will succeed. The book is small and illustrated and therefore not daunting to dip into. It does not cover all the principles and theories of education, but it is so well-written that I wished that it did cover these as well, rather than having to read about these in more complex books! I found it really helped with my understanding of the subject and certainly clarified some areas that had been nebulous for years."

Recommended for applied statisticians

"How large should my sample be?" is a question that is often put to applied statisticians. This book is a valuable resource for answering this question. Of course there are web sites that will do the calculation, but, in my experience, they often do not give me much understanding of the theory that underpins the calculation. In this book, Ryan blends theory, practical advice, a guide to software and an overview of the research literature - he has lots of references. There are exercises for each chapter too - with answers to selected exercises. Right now I am looking for information on sample size problems for repeated measures designs: Ryan has some helpful pages on this not-so-standard topic. Also, Ryan writes well. I recommend this book to any applied or industrial statistician: it will be a good addition to your professional library. Finally, I like the size of the book (374 pages) - good for reading on the train. "Sample size determination and power" should be in every university library.

Great coverage of the topic

Great review of the topics covered. Comprehensive in that the topics are explored from several angles and the author comments on many of the considerations that come up in practice. My background is engineering, and I have taken several graduate level stats courses, but the topic of sample size always seems to get put on the back burner. I purchased the book to fill in gaps in my own understanding, and the book was perfect for that. The only improvement I would suggest is to have more examples or problems to work out at the end of the chapters. If I could give this 4.9 stars, I would. This might not be a great book for someone who is new to stats.

A completely unexpected delight!

Christopher L. Bennett generally writes Trek stories that are long, complex, and full of scientific or philosophical musings. They're great, but not what you'd call light.

Quite unexpectedly, this one is breezy and hilarious and full of thrills and twists, generally gleeful at the possibilities of the universe in general, and ridiculously fun to read. It reads like an episode of Doctor Who, in all the best ways, and not just because of the time travel. There's a joy in this that's hard to quite explain, but it's definitely a constant-grin-from-ear-to-ear piece of work.

I hope we get lots more of these. This is the best eBook novelette in the Trek line so far, hands down.

An Enjoyable Anachronistic Romp

Bennett has again created an enjoyable story which will induce OCD in the reader! Lucsly & Dulmur once again reprise their "Dragnet-esque" characters which brings a smile along with a fast moving, creative plot! Imaginative subplots weave a mesmerizing sine wave throughout the length of this book! Bennett adroitly manipulates familiar themes in a new mosaic, giving the reader a truly "out of time" experience! Fantastic work!

Another winner for the ST Department of Temporal Affairs series!

For a series that started with two boring characters in a one off episode in ST-DS9, this series has become a firm favourite with me. It easily exceeds ST-Titan, and many of the ST books written since ST went off the air, in entertainment, storyline and fluidity. Perhaps this is because of the author Mr Benett, Perhaps it's because it's not locked into too much "canon" tech and plotlines. Whatever the reason, I have found myself eagerly awaiting each new DTI book. And although only 119 pages long, this one did not disappoint.

It's hard to write a review that doesn't have spoilers. The story is a wild ride. It's a bit more "Doctor Who" in some ways. I better stop there, because I'll say too much otherwise, but it's a good ST book. Can't wait for the next one!

Excellent "How To" for Optical Designers

In the acknowledgements the authors state they "wanted to create a book in the field of optical system design that was clear and easy to understand" - Mission accomplished!

This book is indeed easy to understand but nevertheless provides detailed explanations of how to design an optical system. While not deeply mathematical there are sufficent formulaes provided (with examples) so you can understand what to do and how to do it. If you were puzzled as to why achromatic lenses are used you won't be after you read this book. The book also explains how distortion occurs and how to get rid of it. Also there are sections on mechanical components such as lens mounting etc. The book also explains how to use typical optical design software.

My only (slight) dissapointment was the relatively few descriptions of typical systems - but using the book you could design these from first principles. Also to be fair there are so many designs out there that this is probabaly asking too much.

I bought this book because as an electronics engineer I did not know enough about optical systems to be able to design one. Reading this book and downloading some freeware optical design software (and using the book to help understand the outputs) has solved that problem

One of the best technical books I own

Having studied the comments on four other books before holding my breath and purchasing "Optical System Design," I was still worried that it would turn out to be a physics-oriented treatment of the subject despite the comments.

I was happily surprised.

Not only is this book well- and often humorously-written (to me at least), it has memorable explanations which make applying the knowledge easier.

In particular, the excellent treatment throughout the book on the six major third-order aberrations' causes has helped me use my optical design tools more correctly. I do not guess about specific changes, I know what to expect when making a change in the design.

I have found over the years that purchasing two texts on a topic is a good strategy. One must be a "thick book," like "Optical System Design," and the other a "thin book" which serves as a map. I'm still looking for the "thin" compliment to OD, but its layout and index are good enough that I will probably not follow my normal pattern.

a bit disappointed

Based on other reviews, you expect a highly polished product - full of glossy enlightening diagrams and explanations. The book is OK and conveys many important notions of optics adequately, especially if you have some background knowledge. However, at times, it feels like a potpourri, too wide to be under control and lacking in rigor. The authors present a few formulas at times and assure us that they could write many more "if they wanted to". However, this book really feels like the work of practitioners - a bit thin on the theory side. Many figures have a printing quality too low to be readable (so much for the Nyquist criteria, which by no coincidence is presented quite poorly) and the chapter on diffractive optics is a didactic catastrophe. Just because a book has been around for a long time and is respected in the field doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon. Still, I find myself reading the book time and again. The book will complement nicely Born and Wolf, which lies at the other extreme.

Grimm ( Left to Themselves ) catalogues with subtlety the daily acts, petty and precious, that women are consumed by but through which, paradoxically, they fulfill themselves. Gleeful college girls in "Research" gather lists of the "guys" with whom they might lose their virginity, but for the narrator the moment of loss is a lyrical glimpse of inevitability and impersonality, as if she were caught up in a musical phrase. The superbly understated "We" tells of three women, glowing in their young marriages and maternal tasks, rising up at night "into sleep and dreams, as light as birds." After this domestic phase quickly passes, they look back at it wonderingly. The narrator of "Interview with My Mother" prods her bedridden parent for old memories and struggles to see how the trivia adds up. In "The Life of the Body," jilted Kate feels robbed when her old lover, a husky red-haired poet, flagrantly expropriates her own grief in his verse. In the harrowing "Bring Back the Dead," Karen waits out the "stiff time" for word of Jenny, her vanished 12-year-old daughter. And, poignantly, it is love stories that keep death at bay in "True Stories"; they are "like a gun . . . trained on the future."

From the author of Left to Themselves ( LJ 1/93) comes an uneven collection of 14 short stories. Many of the stories are truly outstanding. "We" chronicles the lives of three young mothers who try to fill the void in their marriages and eventually come to terms with themselves. "Mommy and Doris" takes place in a McDonald's, where an astute older woman observes the actions of a young family. "Buying a Pumpkin" is the poignant tale of a father caring for his three children after his wife has left him. "Research" evokes a bygone era, which features a teenage girl determined to lose her virginity. Finally, "Bring Back the Dead" is the harrowing story of a mother whose daughter has been missing and is found dead. Unfortunately, not all of the stories are of the same high quality. Some are slim and relatively insubstantial. Overall, however, this is a pleasant collection. Recommended for public libraries.

A novelist's debut volume of short stories, 14 in all, many having first appeared in the New Yorker. Grimm's first novel Left to Themselves (1993) told of emotionally inept, blue-collar Ohio characters and tended to drift in the same hopeless depression as its cast. The stories in Stealing Time show Grimm in better form, although her soft endings may well satisfy only herself. Perhaps the best of the lot is the National Magazine Award-winning ``We,'' a true knockout about three young Ohio women, their early marriages, their children, and their first decade as adults; their emotions settle like rust and their expectations lower with new sewing machines, Tupperware parties, recipe trading, book clubs, parties, illnesses, and aging husbands. ``Bring Back the Dead'' also has a strong storyline: a psychic mother, while trying to locate her kidnapped daughter, drives off her husband, boxes junk food in a Dunkin' Donuts, and goes through psychic rituals. In ``We Who Are Young'' a pair of sisters visit their 81-year-old aunt on a sultry midsummer day, and the aunt makes clear to them the special qualities of sisterhood. In the title story, the same sisters, now losing their own grip on the past, visit another aunt with Alzheimer's who has lost much more than they have (this one ends weirdly). The lively ``Research'' tells of a college sophomore's desire to dispense with her virginity, even though her roommates don't go that far in their sex play; success has a small payoff. ``Book of Dreams'' and ``Teenagers Living in Cleveland'' are drowsy coming-of-age tales. Beautifully crafted, moving group of short stories.

I love these stories! I agree that her novel is a bit slow, but these stories are beautifully written, full of memorable detail and complex emotions. Highly recommended.
Update: For some reason, the heading of this review lists the author of the book as Stanley Weintraub. That is incorrect. If you click on the link you will see that the author's name is Mary Grimm.

A rich and moving account about who we are

Stealing Time is a wonderful collection of stories by Mary Grimm. The tales are hopeful yet never sugar-coated. The voice is authentic yet changes from story to story, proving Mary Grimm's skill at creating believable and honest characters who hurt, hunt, and sometimes find answers like the rest of us.

Important stories

I believe in the old idea of storytelling, that we tell our stories in order to help the next generation understand what it means to be human. Mary Grimm's stories fit perfectly into my idea of storytelling. These stories opened my own life stories within me and made me want to write. They reminded me of what is important to me about growing up female. I recognized life transitions that I had gone through but forgotten. These are important stories.

About the Author
Dr. Janell Carroll received her Ph.D. in human sexuality education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. She teaches in the psychology department at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, is an AASECT-certified sexuality educator, and has received numerous awards for her teaching and work in the field of human sexuality. In 2005, the University of Hartford recognized her with the Gordon Clark Ramsey Award for Creative Excellence, given to professors who demonstrate sustained excellence and creativity in the classroom. Carroll has also been recognized by Planned Parenthood as a Sexuality Educator of the Year. Prior to teaching at University of Hartford, Dr. Carroll was a tenured psychology professor at Baker University, where she was honored with awards for Professor of the Year and Most Outstanding Person on Campus. A dynamic educator, speaker, and author, Dr. Carroll has also hosted two of her own radio talk shows about on sexuality and appeared as an expert on numerous television talk shows and networks. Great book for psychology of human sexuality.

This book is incredibly interesting! Using the MindTap access that goes with this book is actually really helpful for understanding the material further with an interactive experience. The book is very well written, easy to understand and brings up a lot of interesting topics and perspectives. I have the kindle edition, and I enjoy it very much.
