A tough choice to make

The right answer to the dumb question "If you could buy only 1 book . . .?" should be "I wouldn't be a vet!" Choosing a comprehensive Small Animal Practice book, however, comes to only 2 alternatives: either Birchard & Sherding's or Morgan's. I am not considering excellent Internal Medicine texts (like Ettinger or Nelson & Couto) because, by design, they leave out important areas of the practice. Which one would you choose, then? I have a slight preference for Birchard & Sherding's (which could be influenced by the fact that I worked in the same school as them for 20 years!). Morgan's outline format occasionally is too restrictive and prevents full explanation of important concepts but it is a great text and a few chapters (like the one on Central Nervous System) are truly exceptional. Each text has its own chracteristics and strongest areas but both are outstanding. What do you do then? Do as I did; buy both! It is a bit more expensive but you will be sure that you have the very best that has been written in small animal practice. I have had no reason to repent.

Clear, easy-to-read supplement for Business Associations and Corporate Finance

I purchased this book with a very narrow focus in mind: I was looking for a supplement to William Bratton's 1300 page (in size ten - or is that size eight? - font) "Corporate Finance" casebook. Anyone who has taken this course in law school will know that there are only a couple of casebooks, and about as many supplements or study aids.

I only read the last one hundred pages, because it corresponded to some of the material in Bratton's text (the earlier portion being very rudimentary - which is a good thing if this is your first brush with the subject, i.e. it covers things like the differences between a corporation and an LLC). * The portion I did read covers in a clear, simple, thorough way the basics of corporate finance - how corporations are valued, how they obtain financing, etc. It goes over the mathematics (future / present value of money, the calculations involved in deciding whether an investment has a net positive value, and so on) in a very intuitive way as well, with lots of examples.

(* One of the authors of this book, William A. Klein, is also the author of the excellent casebook "Business Associations, Cases and Materials on Agency, Partnerships, and Corporations," which is a popular casebook used for the basic law school introductory class on business. This book covers some of the material that you would find in that class, as well as material in the more advanced - and specialized - Corporate Finance class.)

I have studied finance for awhile. This is the easiest-to-understand book that is out there about the topic. If you want to understand basic Corporation Finance, but are not really a numbers person, this is the book for you.

The best textbook I have ever read. It is well-written and information-dense without being dry or boring. There are no unecessary or overly wordy descriptions. I learned more from this book than I've gotten out of any textbook in a long time.

In the summer of 1914, as Europe teetered on the brink of war, the prospect of immediate Zeppelin raids on London and other major British towns and cities loomed large. Britain's aerial defenses were negligible, while German armed forces mustered a total of eleven airships.

The First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston S. Churchill, accepted responsibility for the defense of London, which translated to defense against Zeppelin attack. His resources were limited, but he believed that attack was the best means of defense. As such, the final four months of 1914 saw the Royal Navy Air Service (RNAS) launching four separate ground-breaking air attacks on Zeppelin bases in Germany, making these Britain's first ever strategic bombing raids: D�sseldorf/Cologne (September), D�sseldorf/Cologne again (October), Friedrichshafen (November) and Cuxhaven (December).

The raids achieved mixed results, but coming so early in the history of military aviation they all demonstrate evidence of great determination, ingenuity, improvisation and daring. The D�sseldorf raid culminated in the destruction of a Zeppelin, the Friedrichshafen raid involved tactics not dissimilar to those employed by the 'Dambusters' raid in 1943, as well as a spying mission into Germany by a flamboyant British entrepreneur, while the Cuxhaven raid saw the very first use of seaplanes in a combined sea/air operation.

This new addition to Osprey's RAID series provides continued coverage of Zeppelin history, but approaching it from a new angle. While the Zeppelin raids against London are a thing of World War 1 history, the British raids against Zeppelin bases have gone largely forgotten. An excellent telling of a little known adventure

In the Zeppelin Base Raids Ian Castle once more uses his extensive knowledge of early aviation to illuminate a little known but fascinating part of the First World War.

In 1914 with the fear of German zeppelin raids looming on the horizon members of the Royal Naval Air Service instituted a series of daring air raids into Germany to bomb the Zeppelin and their support crews on the ground. These were in early air craft with only the most rudimentary of weapons but in the dark days of 1914 reports of these raids were as stirring for the British as they were threatening to the Germans. Of little consequence in the great events of the war these raids were the first of their kind

I've noticed in some of his earlier works Mr. Castle has often been too detail oriented and too clinical but I'm happy to say none of that is in evidence here as he threads his way between explaining the technical difficulties encountered by the raiders flying by visual aids alone and the sense of `what a lark' that must have been a element of it all. Indeed the one problem I have with the works has me more annoyed at the editor than Mr. Castle. The maps showing the raids all seem to come at the end of the chapters on the raids they cover. Since, for example I have no idea where Friedrichshafen is, it would certainly help to know where the heck it is before reading about all the troubles had navigating there, watching fuel and avoiding, or not, neutral territories but this is a minor quibble in an otherwise amazing story.

On the grand scheme of the First World War, the 1914 air raids by the RNAS were barely a side show, but to the men who lived them they were desperate adventures and Castle wonderfully brings their adventures into the 21st century honoring these daring young men in their flying machines.

Preventive Strikes against Zeppelins

I had known that Germany used zeppelins to bomb England as early as January 1915, but I hadn't known that before then England had already attempted to bomb zeppelin bases in order to destroy the airships while they were on the ground and vulnerable.

Even by 1908, there was a great deal of worry about whether the zeppelins could be used against England in a war (one American newspaper had even called Count Zeppelin "the Bogie Man of England"). And with the naval arms race between Britain and Germany, most people feared that it was just a matter of time before Germany would unleash its fleet across the English Channel. Winston Churchill, then first lord of the admiralty, decided that the best way to deal with the zeppelin threat was to destroy the zeppelins before they could fly.

This book follows that theme and describes the series of raids against the zeppelin bases, describing the rationale, planning, choice of route, planes, and people involved in the attempts. The author does a good job of describing the raids, introducing the pilots and players behind the scenes, and giving some background. There are a few side stories, like the one about the officer who drove too fast and wrapped his car around a tree, which add human interest to what could have been an entirely dry book.

I like that there are maps and a lot of photographs, as well as artwork. My gripe with the maps is that they were often pages away from the text that referred to them, and I had to keep flipping back and forth to refer to them, which is why I gave the book only four stars. Otherwise, the maps are clear, although they could have been printed smaller and put on the page with the accompanying text and still been quite useful. What I really could have used would have been a map that showed the formation of the ships on the raids, as Castle's description got a bit bogged in places and I kind of lost track of who was were.

The photographs were really good additions to the text, and showed both men and equipment. I have copies of some primary source documents from the British National Archives, and I found photos of the people who authored them in this book, which really was a bonus for me. Now I have a face to go with the names. Anyway, some of the photographs really could have been larger, particularly the group shots, so that the men's individual features could be seen more clearly. But really, that's a nitpick and doesn't take away from the material.

Another reviewer mentions "30 pages," but my copy was a full 80 pages of text plus index. Of course, much of those 80 pages were occupied by maps, photos, and artwork, but there is still a good deal of reading. The book includes a bibliography. This is my first Osprey book, but I already have another two lined up: Castle's "British Airships 1905-30" and Charles Stephenson's "Zeppelins: German Airships 1900-40."

A very good overview of this “Raid”

This book tells the story of a series of “strategic” raids on zeppelin sheds during the first world war. The term strategic has to emphasized as the aircraft used only flew a little over 100 miles to their targets. Also, each of the participating aircraft carried only between 2-4 bombs of about 20 pounds each. Even then quite a few of the bombs did not even go off. Many of the aircraft were so flimsy that they were destroyed in storms at their launching points. All and all an almost Charley Chaplinesque story. This is what makes the story all the more interesting though. The reader learns (and is amazed) at how primitive air technology was at the time. It was barely possible for aircraft of the time to be launched, make it to their targets (or even find them – in a few of the raids even this was not possible despite the fact that the sheds were about 700 feet in length), drop a few small bombs and make it back. Yet they did. Only one of the raids actually destroyed a shed and sheltered zeppelin but, considering the technology at the time this was still quite an accomplishment.

The book is very well researched. It not only makes use of secondary sources but also makes use of original archival sources. It is not just a synopsis of previously published works as so many Osprey publications are. Highly recommended.

Unlike the 1st edition, this edition involves health professionals into the planning process. Christianity is Christ ....It is all about Him

"By Grace you have been saved through faith." (eph 2:8-9) I know i'm saved by grace but how am i to live the Christian life??? The bible says "as you received Christ Jesus the Lord so walk in Him."(col 2:6) How did you recieve Him? "Did you recieve the Spirit by the works of the law of by the hearing of faith? are you so foolish having begun in the Spirit are you now being made perfect by the flesh." (galatians 3:2-4) "the letter kills but the Spirit gives life" (2 corithians 3:6)Jesus said "i am the Life" (John 14:10) Only Christ can live the Christian life - the Christian life isn't an imitation but a participation in the life of another. "I am the Vine you are the branches." (John 15) The whole Christian life in Christ is "by grace through faith."

This is a wonderful book - he points to Christ and His completed work on the cross, "our old man was crucified with Him." That is a historic fact. We die to sin not by our experiences but by the believing of the fact of what He has done. Now day by day we get to walk less and less according to the flesh and more and more according to the Spirit - by faith believing on His work of the crucified and risen Jesus. It is by knowing our POSITION (standing) in Christ and what He has done that we are able to grow in our CONDITION (walk, fellowship and growth) in Him day by day. The basis of the Christ life is faith .....faith in God's fact - that is in the God who cannot lie! I recommend this book so highly.

"but we with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are beng transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord."(2 cor 3:18)

UPDATE: by the way the Bible college i went to (called Calvary Chapel Bible College in Europe), the director Mr. Metzger said this book was heresy and promptly removed it from the library. Not a good place to study the Bible at.

Important
By Searching for what the Bible actually says
There is a lot to commend Miles' thoughts on sanctification. His strength is in pointing out that the unique Christian life is not following a bunch of rules where you try really hard not to commit certain sins (or taboos for that matter). That system is simply a legalistic approach, a la Galatians 3:3. His emphasis is that the proper Christian life is defined by a relationship of trust and intimacy with Christ.

If you hear some complaining that his system is one of antinomianism, I think it would be worth looking closely at what those critics are really saying. Generally, they are either reacting to the rivalry between the rest of his writings at withchrist.org and their pet doctrines (mostly Covenant Theology), or they haven't read the book carefully. For those who think he really is saying that it's OK to sin, or that sin doesn't matter, I'd encourage them to either actually read the book in the first place or re-read the first 13 or so chapters.

The tendency for people to miss the point is the only criticism I have of the book. Miles took a 40 page message and stretched it to about 180. This might be the nature of the beast, as it's really a compilation of 60 or so essays he wrote over many years. But, he's definitely verbose.

Save Your Money and Buy the Book if Interested

Save your money and buy the book if you are interested in Bill Williams stuff. Everything that is explained gets referenced back to the book "Trading Chaos - 2nd edition" anyways. She talks more about issues of - trading is risky, you need more education, etc. than the actual trading system. To me it was nothing more than an introduction to buy their course. And when Justine figures out she is running out of time, tells people not to ask questions till the end and speeds through the last parts to the point of losing her breath. The abundance of charts they brag about on the DVD cover is nothing more then some hand picked charts with her saying, if you bought here and sold here you would have made this much money, a big disappointment at best.

Abby Green is one of those authors that can captivate a reader from the very first sentence. She has a knack for transporting you to a world of glitz,glamour and passionate love affairs,taking you a reading ride one will never forget.

In One Night with the Enemy she as certainly done it once again. The story tells about Maddie and Nic,two souls bound by the world of wine making,family fueds and old love.

Maddie and Nic had one of those magical stolen affairs we often hear about but then she discovers a secret about Nic and takes off ! Then eight years later she returns and Nic decides to set his plan for "revenge" into motion.

Set in stunning Argentina the author takes these two characters and combines the world of wine making and their families legacies into one of the best books of the year!

I loved the fire and passion between Nic and Maddie to the point of distraction and for me I did not want the book to end. The gorgeous descriptive writing by the author has the unique effect of not only allowing one to picture every person and location perfectly in one's mind eye but to have you actually wishing you were there so that you could grab hold of the characters and give them a good slap for the mistakes they make,but also have you crying tears of joy when it works out.

Nic was a strong,powerful forceful character to recon with and Maddie was the stunning beauty from his past that had to be dealt with at all cost. I held fast to every single word and could not wait to see how the author would bring the "semi sweet" Maddie and "robust" Nic together in true Abby Green fashion.

Well done Abby !

When Maddie returns to Argentina to take over the vineyard that her estranged father had left to her in his will. It is to find the estate deeply in debt. Determined not to sell, she intends to find an investor.

Nic who owns his own vineyard, is determined to get rid of Maddie one way or another. Years ago they had become close but were torn apart by family rivalry and betrayal. Nic has not forgiven Maddie. When Maddie's attempts at finding someone to invest financially fail. She is forced to accept Nic's help. But there is a price he wants something from her. But will she be willing to give him what he wants.

Once again Abby Green gives us another highly emotional read. Full of passion and angst. With great characters and a fast moving plot, this is a great way to pass a few hours. Recommended.

The storyline really flowed. There was angst, but because they were both able to talk easily with each other, their secrets were laid bare without too much coaxing. Although he was the typical alpha male,I loved how his emotions confused him. She was also nice, but always too close to tears. Would definitely read again.

Open your mind

I have been reading almost every new erotica book to hit the Amazon shelves for the past 5 years now, and I thought this was a little different take on the norm! If you never liked 50 shades, you probably won’t like Grey - but everything’s worth reading once, so give it a try. Keep in mind this is retelling 50 shades, just a different perspective!

If you’re not in the mood for Grey, there are the novelette options like Dark Petals by Deidre St Luke the up and coming writer.

Lastly, I have read some of the reviews posted and while I am not bashing anyone's opinion I would simply like to point out some facts.
1. This is a retelling of the original story but from Christians POV--therefore how can the author make it be different or original
2. Whereas I did find Christian to be immature and childish in his actions and thoughts those of us who read the original series new this already. His growth didn't come around until after the second book started. Even Dr. Flynn tells Ana that in a lot of ways emotionally Christian is still a child so this is not news.
3. I do believe this book helped to better understand Christian I am not altogether certain it was necessary as the series was already a huge success but just as I am sure with other readers the times I really wanted to know what he was thinking came in book two and three.
For instance when he and Ana marreid, what was on his mind as he and Ros made their way home after Charlie Tango crashed, and I really want into his head the night he confronted Elena at his mother's home.
4. As far as the movie I watched it and believed it to have been as true to the book as was possible for a decent rating. Although I honestly believe that there is NO ONE that could have been picked to play the part of Christian that would have been accepted by all the fans of this series. Each woman as we read FSOG had a mental picture of Christian and everyone's picture would have varied in some way.
Anyway I hope to hear more from Christians POV IN THE FUTURE

50 Yawns of Grey

I apologize, faithful readers. I am one of the hordes of people who clamored for Christian's version of his romance with Anastasia Steele. I begged for it, in fact. I thought his perspective, included at the end of Fifty Shades Freed, was far more captivating than anything Ana had to say.

So when I found out that E.L. James, who clearly recognizes an opportunity when she sees one, was publishing Christian's POV, I was as giddy as a thirteen-year-old at a One Direction concert.

Giddier, even.

And then - AND THEN - I read the book.

The thing about the Fifty Shades juggernaut is that the books, while ridiculously written and unintentionally hilarious, were fun. They were addicting in the worst possible way, and I could not put them down.

Literary crack: you know they're bad for you, but you don't care.

The movie version was better than I thought it would be. Dakota Johnson! I know, right? Who knew? Together with director Sam Taylor Johnson, she gave Ana a much-needed personality injection, emphasizing the virtually nonexistent friskiness of the book. (Jamie Dornan - well, he's gorgeous, and he kind of looks like the Christian I pictured. Here's hoping he loosens up a little in the next one.)

Lately, though, it appears as if E.L. James has started taking herself a wee tad too seriously. First she makes Sam Taylor Johnson so miserable that Johnson backs out from directing the sequel. Then James decides she will commandeer the script and write it herself. I'm waiting for the announcement that she's going to direct, too.

This brings me to Grey, which is just all around a regrettable book.

Here is why I was excited about this one: we get Christian's voice. Let's be honest here for a minute. Do you remember Ana from the books, or do you remember Christian? Which character intrigued you more? CHRISTIAN DID. Ana is about as interesting as a speed bump, but Christian? Christian is glorious. He's complex. He's fascinating. He's utterly compelling. When James tossed out that teaser at the end of Freed, it made me sit up straight and squeeze my thighs together in anticipation.

So much potential.

I won't even address the writing, other than to point out that you will be relieved to know that there are no goddesses or half-moon-glasses-wearing subconsciouses, THANK THE SWEET GHOST OF TWILIGHT. Gone, too, are the apexes of Ana's thighs and the junctures of her thighs, although those have been sadly replaced by Christian's rather clinical usage of "labia." Remaining are the smirking, the eye-rolling, the lip biting, and the sighing.

You just can't keep an eye-rolling, smirking Dom down, I suppose.

Okay, I have to mention such soul-stirring lines as these:

"She's oil on my troubled, deep, dark waters."

"I'm going to make you come like a freight train, baby."

Just ... I mean ... what woman doesn't want to hear THAT?

What I wanted from this book was something new. At the very least, I wanted something FUN. Like the first three. I wanted to revel in the bad writing - biting my lips, smirking, sighing and rolling my eyes right along with Christian and Ana. How about an insight into Christian? Or a different interpretation of the same event, a stimulus to renew my interest in the Copper-Haired Boy Wonder.

What I got was the same damn thing, all over again.

Rinse and repeat.

Yeah, James throws me a few new nuggets. I now know where those Tess of the d'Urbervilles books came from, and I know a lot more about Christian's professional wheeling and dealing than I ever cared to know. There are way too many dreams about his tortured childhood. I kind of got the point after the first two or three, E.L., but thanks for repeating them OVER AND OVER AND OVER again.

There is one scene toward the end - the one in which Ana asks to be punished - that was what I'd call somewhat revelatory. Seeing it through Christian's eyes was pretty darn awesome and far more interesting than any scene that came before it. In fact, that scene triggers James's only true creativity in this book, as we get to see what happens to Christian after Ana walks out on him.

So basically a chapter's worth of interesting reading.

Here's what I realized while reading Grey: Christian's perspective should have been included in the original three books, perhaps in alternating chapters. M. Pierce did this with tremendous potency in the Night Owl trilogy, and it would have served this series well if James had incorporated Christian's POV. I also realized that Christian, for however much this book bored me, remains one of the more commanding (no pun intended) characters I've encountered in fiction. There is something about that man that makes me want more of him.

Now let's talk about the hot headboard rocking. It's delicious. I liked getting in Christian's head as he decided which of his toys to implement, and I liked knowing the sensations he experienced with Ana. There are no new sexual escapades to read about, and those of you who enjoyed The Tampon Scene will be thrilled to know that it makes an appearance.

What you learn from reading Grey is that this is Christian's story to tell. Not Ana's. Yeah, it's supposed to be her Journey of Discovery or whatever, but she's so uninspiring and dull that you don't care. Christian learns more about himself than Ana will ever know about herself, and his changes are far more profound.

Is this the last we will see of Christian Grey in print? I kind of hope so, even as I feel some reluctance at saying goodbye to him. But it's time. Unless E.L. James can give us something new, we need to give Christian a hearty Flogger Salute and send him into the publishing ether.

That being said, this book, which is the EXACT same story as FSOG, only told from Christian's point of view, is the best of the bunch. Christian is a very private person. Reading the story through Ana's eyes, he seems cold and distant. He is anything but. He is trying to please Ana, but he is confused. His dreams reveal so much more about his real mother. It is heartbreaking to know she called him maggot. The dream with Elena is the most revealing. He says he is over Elena, but he thinks of her quite a bit. Ana was a bit whiny to me, but I like her a lot more from Christian's eyes.

>I hope the author will write book 2 and 3 from Christian's point of view. He is fascinating and so unsure of himself! Not until this book, did I realize how distracted he was at work. I wondered how he could invest in a consuming relationship with Ana and still run a successful company, flawlessly.
