Ugh. Well, I guess the title worked. ...

Ugh. Well, I guess the title worked. I picked it and read it because of the title and blurb, ooh, a lesbian version of a really sexy book, let me try it. I kept waiting for it to pick up and get interesting or sexy or anything, but it never happened. The plot was thin, the characters were flat and the sex wasn't hot. And why was it called fifty shades, when BDSM was such a major part of that series, and only a sidebar in this one? Way to cash in on someone else's success.

Piggybacking at best

I received a free copy of 50 Shades Of Pink by KT Grant on Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my review and I am not required to give a positive review. The opinions are expressed are my own.
I am a huge fan of the Fifty Shades Of Grey series so I was looking forward to reading something similar and getting that same sort of vibe. With that said, this book just lacks a richness and sort of finesse in the way the story is told plus it could use some editing. The main characters name is Lindsay Pinke which is pronounced Pink, the e is silent. Lindsay is naive in a bad way. Her boss at Virago Magazine sends to do an interview with Victoria Nox for an upcoming article. When Lindsay arrives at the interview she is completely flustered and intimidated by Nox. Nox freely admits that she did a background check on her and that freaks Lindsay out. Lindsay bolts from Nox's office. It actually says "I didn’t run but I bolted down the hall and toward the door that would lead me to freedom." She was so disturbed by the interview that she goes home, climbs in bed and refuses to answer her phone or talk to anyone. I'm a sucker for kink, romance, drama and stupidity to a certain point but this story is just bad.

I was a bit skeptical about this book that I received from NetGalley to give an honest review. All in all though I thoroughly enjoyed it. Had to overlook the grammatical errors but, if you can I guess turn your cheek to it, you'll be fine. I have to say though some parts I was wanting, and needing more in depth look into Victoria's past or I guess explanations about her ex Laci. I'm a girl who likes to know why, what, when, and where. I was biting at the bit when I started to notice that the pages were slimming down and I really didn't want it to end especially since I wanted to know what the big "deal" was between Victoria and Ben. I hope I don't have to wait too long for the sequel. Back to practicing the art of patience.

About the Author
Gale Rhodes earned a B.S. in applied mathematics at North Carolina State University, and then a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina. He is currently a professor of chemistry at the University of Southern Maine, Portland. His main duty, and first love, is teaching undergraduate biochemistry. He has received awards for outstanding teaching at three different colleges. His best known publication is the first edition of Crystallography Made Crystal Clear, which received very complimentary reviews in several journals. He has also published three book chapters, three book reviews, and about 30 articles on diverse subjects, including research articles in biochemistry, and articles on chemistry, science, and interdisciplinary education.

Buy "Biomolecular Crystallography"

Buy "Biomolecular Crystallography" instead. This book tries to condense too much information on too few pages. I didn't understand everything in "Biomolecular Crystallography", but the sections that I did understand, are very well written. It's more expensive, but it's a better book, for those that really want to understand crystallography beyond various tutorials on the internet and "Crystallography Made Crystal Clear".

Clear perhaps, accurate not

While Crystallography made Crystal Clear by Gale Rhodes is certainly easy to read, it oversimplifies things and introduces a few inaccuracies. It falls short to make the student really understand crystallography, which, in my opinion, is not a good thing for a textbook. On the other hand, I have made the experience that, unfortunately, many students are happy with only a superficial knowledge of the basic theory (I have been teaching crystallography for about a decade now) and this book helps with this attitude.

My advice: if you just want to pass the class and don't care about the subject, go with this book. If, however, you really want to understand what crystallography is about, you need to read either the great beginner's book by Werner Massa: Crystal Structure Determination or the more protein crystallography oriented but equally great beginners book by Jenny Glusker and Kenneth Trueblood: Crystal Structure Analysis -- A Primer. Once you have digested the Massa or the Glusker/Trueblood, you can work your way through the book edited by Carmelo Giacovazzo: Fundamentals of Crystallography.

After reading and understanding the Massa or Glusker/Trueblood and the Giacovazzo, you'll be ready to survive a discussion with any crystallographer any time. (What is more: you will enjoy the discussion!) The book by Gale Rhodes, however, will only get you over the exam and you'll miss out on the great fun crystallography can be.

A new edition of the Glusker Trueblood has come out: Crystal Structure Analysis: A Primer. The classic has been brought up-to-date and there really is no excuse any more for reading any other introductory textbook than the Glusker/Trueblood. Especially not the book by Gale Rhodes.

About the Author

Keith E. Stanovich is currently Emeritus Professor of Human Development and Applied Psychology at the University of Toronto. He is the author of over 175 scientific articles and seven books.� Stanovich is the 2012 recipient of the E. L. Thorndike Career Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association and the recipient of the 2010 Grawemeyer Award in Education. In 2000 he received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. Stanovich is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 3, 7, 8, and 15) and the Association for Psychological Science.

Methodology Primer for Everyone

Stanovich was assigned reading in my psych class years ago (this review is of the 4th edition). It's the best introduction to sound methodology in the behavioral sciences I've ever read. As previous reviewers have pointed out, the critical thinking skills you learn from this book can (and OUGHT to) be applied) to many, many other facets of our daily life. It's not just for psych majors, but for everyone who reads a newspaper, buys consumer products, votes in elections, etc. And you don't need a background in statistics to benefit from it. A worthy companion to Darrell Huff's classic "How to Lie with Statistics" and John Allen Paulos's "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper".

A must-read for anyone in psychology!

I read this book during my research methods class while completing my undergraduate education four years ago. This was one of the most helpful books that I have ever read related to psychology. More specifically, this book reminds us that, as psychologists, we need to remember to take in all information with a grain of salt. In other words, remember to critically evaluate all information presented to you and not believe everything is face valid.

Finally, a psychology through a skeptic's lens!

I have been waiting for years for a book like this to come along. It is truly a great read and gives tremendous skeptic treatment to the 'science' of psychology. For a long time I've considered myself a skeptic, but I have been on the fence as how to treat psychology--art or science? This book helped me to see it very clearly as science. Psychology has a long way to go to shed the soot of pseudoscience that has collected upon it in the last century, but if more people can cut through to the heart of the matter, like Stanovich has done, then the sooner it will emerge and bloom.

About the Author
Alireza Bahadori, Ph.D., is a research staff member in the School of Environment, Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW, Australia. He received his Ph.D. from Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia.During the past twenty years, Dr. Bahadori has held various process and petroleum engineering positions and was involved in many large-scale projects at National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC), Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), and Clough AMEC PTY LTD. He is the author of 250 articles and 14 books. His books have been published by multiple major publishers, including Elsevier. He has served on the editorial board of a number of journals and is a member of Engineers Australia.

Dr. Bahadori is the recipient of the highly competitive and prestigious Australian Government's Endeavor International Postgraduate Research Award as part of his research in oil and gas area. He also received a Top-Up Award from the State Government of Western Australia through Western Australia Energy Research Alliance (WA:ERA) in 2009. Dr. Bahadori serves as a member of the editorial board and reviewer for a large number of journals. He was honored by Elsevier to be an outstanding author of the Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering in 2009.He is member of Institution of Engineers Australia and a chartered engineer (CEng) member of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE,) London, UK.

Adult/High School–This entertaining guide is chock-full of trivia. Starting with the early 1900s, it is organized primarily by character or book title; hordes of heroes, villains, and the indefinable stride through its colorful pages. Although the contents lean heavily toward the superhero, the author includes a few independents like the hallucinogenic work of R. Crumb and Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth (Knopf, 2000). Characters from children's humor make small appearances as well. Not surprisingly, the entries for the more iconic figures like Superman and Spiderman have significantly more detail than the others. Although comic-book trivia encyclopedias are nothing new, this one stands out because of the excellence of the reproductions of the original art. Just casually flipping through the pages gives a startling and overwhelming sense of how much quality work artists and writers produced over the last 100 years. Goulart also includes some entries about the more influential writers, artists, and styles. These sections include interesting pointers for those looking for new or different material. A decent comic encyclopedia that gears mostly towards the golden age.

As with most of these comic book/fantasy "guides" or "encyclopedias", such a huge task is bound to end up with a few factual errors and typos. There are certainly a few of those here in this book. For instance, Ron Goulart mentions that Jim Lee helped launch X-Men, Vol. 2 in 2001 (a full ten years after it originally happened). Such a mistake would probably fall in the "typo" category, but still pretty silly nonetheless.

The author admits that he grew up reading comics during it's "golden age", and it shows as this book *mostly* focuses on the industry throughout the late 20s-50s, and seems to completely forget all but the truly major top-selling characters of the 60s onward. But this indeed the "Comic Book Encyclopedia" because all years are represented, up to about 2001, it's just that the golden age seems to be the primary focus. Reading many entries in this book, I often wondered if Goulart was simply inserting his own favorites from his childhood into the book, because many of these characters and titles I had never heard of, even though I am a fan of that era. He seems to showcase the most obscure of companies, creators, and books even for the 30s & 40s.

Also at times Goulart seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder and may make remarks in regards to how underrated or overrated an artist or writer was, going as far to call out certain artists by speaking of how poor their style is.

But don't get me wrong, this encyclopedia is a joy to read. There's a great use of artwork here in relations to characters, comic book covers, and a creator's work. Having been born in 1981, I still have great interest in all those comic book years before me and I really enjoy reading about and seeing the artwork of the books of the 30s and 40s and 50s. So as long as you're not expecting an overview covering the New Avengers, X-Men, JLA, and Batman universes exclusively and don't mind catching up on the golden age, this is a very good book to pick up for fans of comics in general.

An Enjoyable Light Study of Comic Books

The Comic Book Encyclopedia is a good light reference book to have. Is it an in depth comprehensive reference manual, for the professional researcher? No. But one of this book's best features is the ability to give some direction to more focused comprehensive research. Specific targeted areas and ample availability of keywords and keyword phrases, will help immensely with an Internet search.

If you understand anything about marketing at all, you know that packaging is half the battle. This book is packaged extremely well. It has great visuals on the front and back covers. Be wary though, and accept the book for its general lighthearted nature.

There is a useable informative timeline of comic book evolution, located inside the front and back covers. But there is no table of contents, which would have been extremely helpful. The index is available, but many times a table of contents is of better use to me.

If this book is purchased from Amazon, it is a lot cheaper than running down to a local bookstore. And if you would like to learn more about comic books or want a general reference resource, I would recommend this book. If more in depth comic book knowledge is wanted, this book is also a good starting point.

As a website builder of "[...]", it has helped me with content and direction into further research. So I have not regretted my purchase. There are better reference materials and websites available though, for the more experienced comic book connoisseur.

Fantastic!

Comic books have been around in one form or another since the 1920's, entertaining children of all ages. From the young readers to the old, there has been a strong following for a number of titles. In fact, some comic books have surpassed the printed page and reached the heights of stardom as movie characters. Some have gone beyond the realm of the animated feature and become quite real, as we've seen recently in X-Men, Spider-Man, Bat-Man, etc., etc.

This Encyclopedia is the ultimate guide to anything dealing with the comic book universe, and very well put together. Art driven storytelling finally has a history book of its very own - from A-1 Comics to Zorro they're all listed here, complete with their own history blurb. Ron Goulart, an award winning SF and mystery writer, is considered one of the leading experts on comics, both nationally and internationally. This Connecticut native has written a number of his own comics and also published numerous books on the subject.

I've been a collector of Vampirella since about the same time my eldest son was born, when the original publication sadly came to an end. An avid collector, it's nice to actually learn a little more about this dangerous lady and her history, such as - the most recent resurrection began in 2001 and still continues. Frank Frazetta penned the cover which showed Vampirella with one spiked heel resting on a human skull, and was basically put together for laughs. However, Vampi took off and when Tom Sutton became the artist in the eighth issue, things went from good to fantastic!

A previous love interest collected Archie comics, and I will admit that they provide some wonderful entertainment. This is the best thing to read when you've got a headache or a fever and don't need to focus completely. According to the information in this encyclopedia, Archie is now in his second century as a teenager. That's a long time. However, there's been numerous changes to this comic along the way. Vic Bloom wrote the script for the very first story, and usually goes uncredited, he also apparently borrowed a character or two from an earlier comic entitled Wally Williams, in Jughead, Betty, and even Riverdale High. It wasn't all original!

Another personal favourite is Heavy Metal and even it is found in these pages. Originally this magazine offered its older readers continuing tales of SF&F, along with some fantastic artwork by European artists. Initially it was made up of translated reprints, which was no big deal to anyone on this side of the Atlantic. Over time, Heavy Metal went the way of most publications and leaned into the sex scene, so it was a publication of SF&F with heavy erotica. I never knew that one half of the Ninja Turtles creative team took over as publisher in 1991 until I read Ron's blurb in the Encyclopedia. There is a huge amount of fascinating information to be found within the colorful covers of this tome. It is a must have for any comic fan!
