A Lovely Work For The Emerging Artist!
By Sarah
As a writer starting out,I wish a source book of this level of excellence had been available to me. I highly recommend this work to anyone just beginning their career in the arts,it a valuable wealth of information that can be used again and again. Writing, painting, acting, this guide is very comprehensive in nature and scope. Slaughter and Kober have managed to put into concise form a work that not only provides reference sources, but a common sense approach for the beginner in the arts to use. In other words, how to avoid the usual pitfalls of the"starving artist". Get this book and use it! It is one purchase, that anyone in the field of the arts, will not regret!

General Overview, Probably good for a high school student at best
By La Dolce Vita
This book is a general overview of artistic careers. The title was misleading for me because I thought I was going to be reading a book about Visual Art not the arts in general. There is a chapter on acting, dance, writing, music and visual arts. The only value I gleaned from the Visual Arts section was the mention of MFA programs and Cal Arts.
For anyone already living in a major city, one third of this book won't be helpful as there are chapters on where to find housing, health care, etc in a major city as well as how to manage your finances. Also, there is a chapter on the Internet (really? in 2011? This book was written years ago and does not seem to be updated).
The the last third of the book is an appendix of one website listing after the next. I don't find listing every link associated with a particular field to be helpful. What would've been helpful is if the authors had checked out those sites when writing their book (and not left that homework to the reader) so they could then write about which sites were most useful and what information could be found there.
Oh well, I'm so glad I checked this book out from the library and didn't waste my money on it.
