Very original - and that's important
By Future Boy
When I bought this book, I half expected the author (not knowing him) to have stolen some ideas from other brain teaser publications. (How easy that would be!)

Pleasantly, and affirming my faith in human nature, this was not so. I have done hundreds, if not thousands, of brain teasers over the years (I subscribed to GAMES Magazine for over twenty years and pursue a wide variety of other brain teaser books including the Mensa publicly released ones). This is the real thing. If the author had lifted a puzzle from elsewhere, I would probably have found at least one duplicate.

The brain teasers are very good. Some are very challenging but nothing that you can't figure out yourself (a couple of puzzles may need Grade 12 math, which I do have as a minimum).

Some (but fewer than 5%) of the puzzles are a bit odd, like for example asking you to decode a commonly known location from a picture rebus, but finding out that the actual answer is phonetically based. I'm more used to exact spelling when doing rebuses. Also, this probably is a British book, so it does use centimetres and metres in a few puzzles, but being Canadian, this was easy for me. But hey Americans, the metric system is based upon 1:10 ratios, so it's not that hard to figure out! Just remember 1 metre = 100 centimetres!

I like the variety. I don't like doing crosswords alone, word games alone, or logic sequences by itself, so this offers a great mix of puzzles.

Considering that the author did all the puzzles from scratch, without the aid of a publishing company to do all the work for him, this book is an amazing feat. Despite my years of experience with brain teasers, I would be hard pressed to invent my own puzzles like he did. Also, none of the puzzles would have been invented with the help of a computer algorithm, so this is pretty amazing.

Try it... you won't be disappointed as long as you're a true brain teaser fan! If you don't like brain teasers at all, this book is not for you. Also I liked the way it was easy to move around in the Kindle (probably have a Kobo as well) version, going from puzzle to hint, solution, or next puzzle. In some ways easier than reading a book!

From the Author
Similar to the subjects of this book, here are some examples of how things are not always as they seem; how there may be surprises even about things with which we are basically familiar: (1) The most SOUTHERN point of the United States is not located in Florida. The southern tip of "The Big Island" of Hawaii holds this distinction. Now what would you think if I told you that the tallest mountain in the United States is also located on this island? It is Mauna Kea. But what about Mt. McKinley in Alaska at 20,320 feet-isn't this the highest mountain in the United States? It is, but only if we figure from sea level! Mauna Kea is 13,796 feet above sea level, but figured from its base, it is 33,480 feet! It is the tallest mountain, not only in the United States, but in the world! (2) It is commonly supposed that the Panama Canal (which shortened the voyage between Atlantic and Pacific ports by as much as 7,000 miles) crosses Panama from east to west. But from Limon Bay to Gatun Lake, the canal runs due south, then takes a turn eastward so that the Pacific side is actually more than twenty miles east of its Atlantic beginning.

Misinformation about the Bible comes as a result of people only seeing the surface or accepting everything they hear as "gospel" without checking it out for themselves. Concerning the flood, some of the questions discussed in my book are: Could pairs of every type of animal, bird, and creeping thing in the entire world fit into Noah's ark? What are the arguments for a limited flood rather than a flood that covered the entire planet? Has the ark been preserved for thousands of years in ice? As with many biblical subjects, when we dig in, common misconceptions are uncovered: the Bible does not say the ark rested upon Mount Ararat-does not say it took Noah 120 years to build the ark-does not say it had never rained before the flood!

People who ridicule the Bible often point out that Joshua's command to stop the sun would not make a longer day, since it is the earth (turning on its axis) that causes day and night. But, again, this may be a case in which a passage has not been properly understood. When Joshua commanded the sun to "stand still," the Hebrew word does indeed mean stop. The question is: Was Joshua commanding the sun to stop moving (as is commonly believed) or to stop shining? The text itself shows that a storm of such density moved in (which would have stopped the sun from shining on them) that it dropped huge hailstones, killing many of their Amorite enemies.

About Lucifer's fall, two basic passages are quoted-one about the king of Babylon (Isa. 14) and the other about the prince of Tyre (Ezek. 28). It is commonly assumed that these passages have a deeper meaning, that they really describe Satan/Lucifer as an angel in heaven-even though this would have been long before there was a Babylon or Tyre! Many, in fact, are unaware that any other interpretation exists. But, as a note in "The Amplified Bible" says, there are Bible students who "feel that the application of the name Lucifer to Satan, in spite of the long and confident teaching to that effect, is erroneous," and that this application has existed only "since the third century A.D." Apparently the first one to apply Isaiah 14 to Satan as an angel in heaven was Tertullian, and it was not until Jerome produced the Latin version of the Bible that the word "Lucifer" appeared in the Isaiah text. Adam Clarke says "the text speaks nothing at all concerning Satan nor his fall." Could it be, then, that some widely held beliefs on this subject may be more theory than biblical fact?

I fully recognize that there are fine Christian people who hold differing views regarding the three subjects that make up the title of my book NOAH'S FLOOD, JOSHUA'S LONG DAY, and LUCIFER'S FALL. I have not written this book in a divisive spirit, nor do I claim to have the final word on all points. It is a study. Many have been blessed by this book and I believe you will be also.

From the Back Cover
Was the flood universal or regional? Could pairs of every type of animal, bird, and creeping thing in the entire world fit into Noah's ark? Did the ark come to rest on the mountain that today is called "Mount Ararat"? Has the ark been frozen in ice for thousands of years? Did Joshua's command to the sun cause almost a day of "missing time"? Did the sun go backwards for 40 minutes in the days of Hezekiah? Was Lucifer an angel who sinned against God, was cast out of heaven, and became the devil? What really happened?

About the Author
In addition to authoring over a dozen books, Ralph Woodrow has had the opportunity to speak for many Churches and groups of various denominations during 40 years of ministry--including camp meetings, conventions and conferences. Through a unique set of circumstances he was put into the ministry at age 18. His ministry began in Canada, where he went as a pianist for an evangelist--but soon several Churches and groups opened their doors for Ralph to preach extended revival meetings. When he returned home after a few of months of ministry in Canada, God continued to open doors for him to preach the Gospel--holding revivals at many Churches and denominational rallies. As a single man of 21 he felt led to hold tent revivals and also to preach on the radio, with good results from both. From these early beginnings sprang an inter-denominational ministry, through which many effective doors of ministry open to this day.

In his early teens, he began to search the Scriptures--becoming intrigued to discover things in the Bible that he hadn't been taught. Similarly, he began to discover that some of the things he had been taught were not in the Bible. Ralph memorized hundreds of Scriptures as a teenager--his whole life revolved around studying God's Word and seeking God's will for his life. He preached his first sermon when he was 15 in their local Church. He spent much time at the Church, doing anything he could to serve the Lord--mowing the lawns, cleaning the Church, praying, and attending the meetings where he grew in the Spirit-filled life.

Throughout his ministry, in addition to preaching the Gospel at large, he has shared neglected biblical truths. AS AN AUTHOR, he is known for his scholarly research, along with his emphasis on the importance of love and unity. He emphasizes that if Christians disagree on some points of doctrine--they should disagree agreeably--knowing that all Christians agree on more than they disagree. Books he has authored total over a half million in print. Also, he has shared printed sermons with a select list--since 1961. Woodrow was born in San Jacinto, California and grew up in nearby Riverside. He and his wife, Arlene who is also a minister and writer, minister in various capacities locally in addition to periodically ministering throughout the U.S., and sometimes in Canada.

It Was a Nice Try...But...
By ModRes
The problem with books like this is that the authors seem to miss major points entirely. While it is useful to do a word study, for instance, the word study does not end the discussion about the meaning of the word used. The only way it would do that would be if EVERY word used in a particular language had only ONE definition associated with it. However, we know this is not true at all, as many words in most languages (if not all), have more than one meaning associated with them.

For instance, the word "left" can mean, or refer to:
1) direction
2) things remaining

So, if I say "Turn left at the next street" to the cab driver, I am referring to direction. However, if I say "I have five dollars left in my wallet," I am referring to something else entirely. So what determines the meaning? Context.

Scientifically, I was also taught that water seeks its own level. Unless there was a solid "bowl" of mountains that served as a type of damn surrounding the area in view, water would naturally seep out, or pour out to find its own level. In that case, people could do the same, yet as the one reviewer pointed out, Scripture clearly indicates that all except Noah and his family survived. A number of good books have been written on the subject of Noah's flood and the possibility of housing that many animals, etc. Ralph Woodrow really does not come close to doing the subject justice, unfortunately.

There are numerous Scripture passages, that speak of the "fountains of the deep" being open. Chuck Missler even states that there may be some scientific evidence that water to completely flood the earth came from other places entirely, like Mars. Whether or not that is true, is beside the point. The Scripture indicates that there was plenty of water available. At the same time, it is clear that the water necessary to cover the earth, would have also very likely created massive physical changes on the earth's surface.

Regarding Lucifer's fall and the passages in Isaiah and Ezekiel, there is no way that the entirety of these passages can refer to human kings. While the similarities in characteristics with Lucifer/Satan and the attitudes of these two earthly kings in Isaiah and Ezekiel, it is also clear that God seemed to reference these two kings as a springboard to speak of Lucifer and his fall.

I don't think Woodrow is one who doubts or belittles the Bible. The reality though is that his arguments simply do not stand up under the scrutiny of Scripture.

Read Genesis with regard to its literary form
By J. T. H.
Mr. Woodrow's book is an uncomplicated approach to addressing several instances where the Scriptures have been erroneously interpreted or applied.

In "Joshua's Long Day", he illustrates an interesting understanding of the passage Joshua 10:12-14 and the language it contains (that is, the sun did not stop in its course across the sky - which is of course to say that the earth did not cease revolving on its axis). As well he addresses the legend concerning "space scientists" and the discovery of a "missing day".

In "Was Satan Once an Angel in Heaven?" he points out several passages in the Bible that have been erroneously applied to Satan.

In "Noah's Flood", what is certainly the main topic of the book, occupying half of it, Mr. Woodrow tackles the traditional view of Noah's Flood as a global deluge and argues that it was instead regional in impact. As well, he demonstrates several of the instances where the "global" tradition's point of view creates conflict and contradiction in Scripture. Thus it is entirely both unfair and untrue to call him a Bible scoffer; especially when he is arguing for the integrity of the text.

The knowledgeable Christian understands that the traditional view of a global flood has become fraught with numerous distortions of scripture. For instance, some attribute all or part of Psalm 104 as referring to issues regarding the Flood. But Psalm 104 is written in regard to the majesty of God and the work of Creation, and not at all the Flood.

Some assert the ark came to rest on Mt. Ararat and that it did not rain on earth until the Flood. But a precise reading of Genesis 8:4 shows that the ark landed on the "mountains" of Ararat. "Ararat" is also translated Armenia, and it is a country and not a mountain. Thus the text represents the ark coming to rest in the hill country foothills of Ararat, its elevation unspecified. As for a lack of rain before the flood, Genesis 2:5 suffers contortion to support that assertion, but on reading the verse in context it is stating the condition of the earth BEFORE God began bringing order and life to the world.

Yet if one is to challenge the "global" view meaningfully, one must bring into consideration the very structure, method and type of the language of Genesis, and Mr. Woodrow only very lightly touches upon it, and principally leaves it outside the book's scope. If one intends to contest such an ingrained teaching as a global flood effectively, it is essential to demonstrate the accurate intention of the text's written word, the focus of the writer, and the purpose of the Author. Not to mention the true application of prophetic texts which refer to it. This topic, then, cannot be addressed in such a small volume conclusively.

There are a few errors in Mr. Woodrow's book that bear pointing out. One error in logic concerns the ark being carried up to the freezing height of the top of Mt. Ararat. He suggests that "it would not have been floating in water, it would have been frozen in ice (page 73)" But if the water had risen to that height, the atmosphere would rise with it, and even if the atmosphere were spread over a larger surface area it need not result in the ark being ice bound. This conceals the point which follows that after the waters receded, the atmosphere would return to near normal and the extreme cold would have been ruinous to the survivors in the ark; that is if it landed near the top of Mt. Ararat, which the Bible does not say it did.

Another logic error is relying on George Lamsa's view of Scripture. In the subtopic "Water in the Desert", Mr. Woodrow notes that Lamsa thought that Moses in Numbers 20:7-11 used his rod to search in the sand for a rock covering a well. By probing in the sand he might "strike the rock" (pg. 111). But the text indicates this cannot be the case. First Moses is instructed by God to SPEAK to the rock in question when the people were gathered BEFORE THE ROCK. Certainly the rock would be visible. The next subtopic "The Lost Axehead" makes another appeal to Lamsa.

In the subtopics: "Crossing Jordan", I side with the view of the waters rising in a heap on themselves; "Ravens or Arabians" with ravens; and "Was Satan Once an Angel in Heaven?" that Satan was an angel that fell (1John 3:8) - but I agree that several passages of the Bible have been erroneously applied to Satan.

If you choose to buy Mr. Woodrow's book, then test it impartially by the light of Scripture. This is the very thing that many would not want you to do.

It is the duty of every Christian to test the teachings they encounter by Scripture; to "prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1Thess 5:21). We should be like the Bereans (Acts 17:10-11), and receive nothing that cannot be sustained by Scripture. Reading Genesis prayerfully with a discerning heart, while paying careful attention to its literary form, the magnificence and majesty of this great literary work inspired of God unfolds before our eyes with wonder!

Typical compromising evangelical local flood compromise
By Dr. J. Sarfati
Authors like Woodrow who promote local flood and long age compromises can be summarised as follows:
"'Science' has shown that the earth is billions of years old, therefore the plain meaning of Scripture must be re-interpreted to fit these 'facts'. If we [with our finite understanding] can't explain a clear biblical teaching, it follows that no explanation is possible, so we must re-interpret this also."
However, they fail to realise that science deals with repeatable observations in the *present*, while billions of years ideas are based on assumptions about the unobservable, unrepeatable *past*. Thus science can never show the world is billions of years old. Rather, we should rely on the eye-witness of One who was there, knows everything, and never lies or errs. But Woodrow et al. rely on the testimony of people who weren't there, often err and sometimes lie. So they are using the theories of fallible people to interpret the Word of the infallible God.
We should realise that different biases can result in different *interpretations* of the *same* data. For example, great thicknesses of rock layers could conceivably be produced either by a little water over long periods, or a lot of water over short periods. Because sedimentation usually occurs slowly today, it is assumed that it must have always occurred slowly. If so, then the rock layers must have formed over vast ages. The philosophy that processes have always occurred at roughly constant rates ('the present is the key to the past') is often called uniformitarianism.
I show how presuppositions strongly influence explanations about the past in my book Refuting Evolution, and this also contains a chapter on evidence for a 'young' earth and global Flood.
It's sad to see professing evangelical writers fall into the errors that characterise the 'scoffers' prophesied in 2 Peter 3: 'all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.' Peter reveals the huge flaw of the uniformitarian scoffers: they are 'willingly ignorant' of special creation by God and a cataclysmic globe-covering (and fossil-forming) flood.
To answer some of Woodrow's specific anti-global-flood arguments:
* The word "erets" translated as earth (Gen. 6:17, 7:19-23) sometimes refers to limited land areas.
However, erets is also used in Gen. 1:1-2, where it must refer to the whole earth. It also fits in with 2 Peter 3:6, where the 'world' was deluged (Greek katakluzo, from which we derive the word cataclysm) by water. Here the Flood is described in universal terms, and paralleled with the coming universal judgment. _Erets_ is often used to refer to the entire dry land surface, e.g. Gen. 1:10ff.
*Woodrow says that the phrase in Gen. 7:19,20 "under the whole heavens" is often used in a limited way e.g. Deut. 2:25.
But no one denies that such phrases are sometimes used in a limited way, or that 'all' is sometimes less than universal. But in the Flood account, God is going out of his way to emphasize the universality of the Flood -- from Genesis 7, NIV: 19 They rose greatly on the earth, and *all* the high mountains under the *entire* heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. 21 *Every* living thing that moved on the earth perished -- birds, livestock, wild animals, *all* the creatures that swarm over the earth, and *all* mankind. 22 *Everything* on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. 23 *Every* living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. *Only* Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. Question: just suppose, for the sake of the argument, that God had wanted to teach a global flood -- how could He have said it more clearly than in Gen. 7?
*Woodrow argues that it would require 726 feet of rain per day for 40 days to cover the mountains.
But this assumes that the mountain were at their present height. However, much uplift happened during and shortly after the Flood (Ps. 104:8, 'The mountains rose; the valleys sank down' as the NASB correctly translates it). This is because of the catastrophic earth movements and huge amounts of still-unconsolidated sediments. Woodrow never bothered to find out what creationists actually teach, so set up a straw man, here and many other places. As computer programmers say, 'garbage in, garbage out'.
* Another straw man: cold and thin air above Mt. Everest?
Again, faulty assumption. Also, Woodrow is ignorant of the fact that air pressure depends on the height of the air column over the earth, relative to the main sea level, not altitude as such. Thus even if the Ark was above the mountains, because the sea level was also higher, the pressure would have been almost normal.
*Woodrow has a whole chapter claiming that Ark's crew could not have cared for all the animals.
Woodrow slavishly follows the usual bibliosceptical ploys, assuming that the animals needed to be taken care of, one at a time. But plenty of labour-saving mechanisms would have been available to the crew of eight, for example, long sloping troughs for both food and water that could have been loaded from only a few central filling stations. There are also systems to deal with waste, e.g. sloped or slatted floors; very deep, absorbent bedding; vermicomposting.
Don't waste your money on Woodrow's book -- buy John Woodmorappe's scholarly and comprehensive book _Noah's Ark: A Feasibility Study_ for thorough demolition of all attacks on the Ark by atheists and their compromising evangelical lackeys. Woodmorappe shows that only 16,000 land animals would have been needed on board as passengers, and also covers a wide range of topics including rapid post-Flood variation, generation of rare alleles, food for the animals after disembarkation, and much more.

Comprehensive and mathematical treatment of digital video processing
By calvinnme
Although published in 1995, this is still the book I come back to time and time again whenever I have a question about processing digital video. Unlike other titles, it is neither knee-deep in terse useless theory nor is it a book about which connector goes where in digital video. You might call it the Gonzalez & Woods of digital video processing, in honor of those authors' fabulous book on digital image processing. The book is organized into six parts:

Part 1- "Representation of Digital Video" consists of chapters 1 through 4. Chapter one is an introduction to both analog and digital video. Chapter 2 models the formation of time-varying images as perspective or orthographic projections of 3-D scenes with moving objects. Chapter 3 addresses the time-space sampling of 3-D lattices, which is what a progression of video frames actually is. Conversion between sampling structures without using motion information is tackled in chapter 4. This is the task of converting video from one format to another.

Part 2 - "Two Dimensional Motion Estimation" consists of chapters 5 through 8. Motion estimation is one of the most effective ways to utilize time redundancy in video frames, and this section discusses four ways to do this - optical flow, block-based methods, pel-recursive methods, and Bayesian methods.

Part 3 - "Three Dimensional Motion Estimation and Segmentation" consists of chapters 9 through 12. The models in this section can be used for either 3-D image analysis or for improved 2-D motion estimation. The two-view estimation techniques described in chapters 9 through 11 are based on optical flow and are very sensitive to small inaccuracies that are present. Thus the method of chapter 12 uses stereo pairs and motion tracking over long stereo sequences for more robust results.

Part 4 - "Video Filtering" consists of chapters 13 through 17. Video filtering differs from image filtering due to the motion information involved. Thus motion-compensated filtering is discussed in chapter 13. Motion-compensated filtering to reduce the graininess found in most "freeze-frame" images is discussed in chapter 14. Restoration of blurred video frames is the subject of chapter 15. Chapter 16 involves conversion between video standards and discusses frame/field up/down conversion and interlacing/deinterlacing techniques. Chapter 17 discusses a comprehensive model for low-resolution video acquisition and a framework for superresolution of video.

Parts 5 and 6, the remainder of the book, discuss still image compression and video compression respectively. These sections are detailed, but more recent developments in compression such as MPEG-4 and wavelets are omitted due to the age of the book.

The reader should already be familiar with image processing techniques as well as calculus, probability, matrix algebra, and some differential equations to get the most from this math-intensive book. However, the book is very detailed to the point that it is straight-forward to program solutions based on its contents. There are exercises at the conclusion of each chapter, but no solutions, since most of the exercises consist of essay-type questions or derivations. This seems odd since the book is very practical in its exposition, one would assume that the exercises would be more practical in scope. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in digital video processing.

Excellent book but require strong Math Background
By Imrankhan M Pathan
This book is really good. Starting from the very first chapter, this book takes you into a very interesting world of digital video. It discusses MPEG video and the technology behind in some detail. This is for the people who want to know how digital video is created and the details about MPEG-2 video. The best part of the book is the Motion Estimation and Compensation portion...... Very high level of mathematical stuff is used in the book and hence will require some good reference books too....

Saints of Augustine, by P. E. Ryan

Sam Findley and Charlie Perrin. Best friends. At least they used to be. But a year ago Sam cut Charlie out of his life—no explanation, no discussion, nothing.

Fast-forward one year, and both Sam's and Charlie's lives are spiraling out of control. Sam has a secret he's finding harder and harder to hide, and Charlie is dealing with an increasingly absent dad and a dealer whose threats are anything but empty.

As told in alternating chapters from Sam and Charlie during the sticky Florida summer before their senior year, the ex-best friends are thrown together once again when they have no one else to turn to.

P. E. Ryan's Saints of Augustine is a witty, enthralling, and unforgettable novel about the power of friendship.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Teens Charlie and Sam were best friends, until Sam stopped speaking to Charlie. In his first book for young people, Ryan (Send Me, 2006) slowly reveals the cause of the rift in chapters that alternate between the two boys' viewpoints. Over a Florida summer, each boy wrestles alone with problems. Following his mother's death, Charlie worries about his shut-in dad, who drinks too much. He escapes by smoking pot, a habit that's put him into deep debt to a threatening dealer. Sam's dad lives with his male lover, and Sam, who has been hiding his own male attractions, worries if he is gay, too. When each boy reaches a crisis point, he finally turns to the other. In a less-gifted author's hands, this novel could have felt crowded. But Ryan offers complex views of family lives, realistic language (including some anti-gay slurs), and convincing characters in Sam and Charlie. Sam's new romance with another guy is a buoyant subplot; just as welcome is the sensitive story of two teen boys forging a close, honest friendship. Engberg, Gillian

Review
"P.E. Ryan has created not one, but two complex, genuine main characters. One of the best books of the year." -- Young Adult Books Central

"Poignant. An exploration of a deep friendship where friends truly support and encourage one another to do the right things." -- KLIATT

"Ryan offers complex views of family lives, realistic language and convincing characters in Sam and Charlie." -- Booklist (starred review)

"Teens will find both boys’ storylines thoroughly compelling right through to the end, which leaves many ends rightfully untied, underscoring the lingering effects of life’s messier moments." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"[This] tightly wrought YA debut moves fast, and each boy’s voice is ragged, distinct and desperate enough to wrangle the hearts of most teen readers, both guys and girls." -- Kirkus Reviews

Honest portrait of a sensitive subject
By kbaccellia
Once upon a time, Sam and Charlie were best friends. But then Sam ended the friendship-no explanations, no nothing. Now, one year later, Sam has a secret he's finding harder and harder to keep, and Charlie's dealing with an emotionally absent dad and an all-too-present dealer. The ex-best friends are thrown together once again when they have no one else to turn to.

I find myself hooked from the first page. This book deals with friendship or the disintegration of one through the eyes of two teen boys. Each teen wonders why the friendship ended and both go on paths that though destructive lead them back to each other.

P.E. Ryan has written an honest and very real portrait of a sensitive subject. Not preachy but an accurate description of the conflict that must go through a teen's mind when dealing with his sexual orientation.

This book has an important message--it's okay to be yourself.

I'd highly recommend this book.

Honest and true
By Edward Aycock
This is a very, very good entry into the growing number of gay-themed young adult fiction - many of which have good intentions but are clunkily executed. If you want to see how a real writer writes, read this tale.

P.E. Ryan has convincingly written a story juggling two narrators, Sam and Charlie, and their separate struggles. Both young men, estranged from one another, have "lost" a parent yet continue to suffer alone. The events that led to the estrangement, and the fallout from it are presented realistically without any unnecessary melodrama or eye-rolling resolutions. I started the first chapters of the book not sure if I was all that interested in Charlie as a character, but Ryan drew me in and I was surprised by how absorbed I became and I couldn't put the book down until I was finished.

"Saints of Augustine" is a great read, better written than many other gay-themed YA books, and deserves to find a wider audience. Here's hoping it does.

Excellent YA
By Robert Lyons
I was really refreshed by this book - it's honest and real and doesn't pull any punches. One of the other reviewers didn't like that it wasn't fleshed out more, but I found that part of the book's charm. Sam and Charlie are expertly drawn and I found that I cared about them from the get-go. Ryan interweaves their two stories expertly and avoids any stereotyping or easy solutions. I think both guys and girls will be able to relate. A great summer read!

Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock 'N' Roll Generation Saved Hollywood, by Peter Biskind

When the low-budget biker movie Easy Rider shocked Hollywood with its success in 1969, a new Hollywood era was born. This was an age when talented young filmmakers such as Scorsese, Coppola, and Spielberg, along with a new breed of actors, including De Niro, Pacino, and Nicholson, became the powerful figures who would make such modern classics as The Godfather, Chinatown, Taxi Driver, and Jaws. Easy Riders, Raging Bulls follows the wild ride that was Hollywood in the '70s -- an unabashed celebration of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (both onscreen and off) and a climate where innovation and experimentation reigned supreme. Based on hundreds of interviews with the directors themselves, producers, stars, agents, writers, studio executives, spouses, and ex-spouses, this is the full, candid story of Hollywood's last golden age.
MARTIN SCORSESE ON DRUGS: "I did a lot of drugs because I wanted to do a lot, I wanted to push all the way to the very very end, and see if I could die."
DENNIS HOPPER ON EASY RIDER: "The cocaine problem in the United States is really because of me. There was no cocaine before Easy Rider on the street. After Easy Rider, it was everywhere."
GEORGE LUCAS ON STAR WARS: "Popcorn pictures have always ruled. Why do people go see them? Why is the public so stupid? That's not my fault."

Amazon.com Review
Not only is Peter Biskind's Easy Riders, Raging Bulls the best book in recent memory on turn-of-the-'70s film, it is beyond question the best book we'll ever get on the subject. Why? Because once the big names who spilled the beans to Biskind find out that other people spilled an equally piquant quantity of beans, nobody will dare speak to another writer with such candor, humor, and venom again.

Biskind did hundreds of interviews with people who make the president look accessible: Scorsese, Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola, Geffen, Beatty, Kael, Towne, Altman. He also spoke with countless spurned spouses and burned partners, alleged victims of assault by knife, pistol, and bodily fluids. Rather more responsible than some of his sources, Biskind always carefully notes the denials as well as the astounding stories he has compiled. He tells you about Scorsese running naked down Mulholland Drive after his girlfriend, crying, "Don't leave me!"; grave robbing on the set of Apocalypse Now; Faye Dunaway apparently flinging urine in Roman Polanski's face while filming Chinatown; Michael O'Donoghue's LSD-fueled swan dive onto a patio; Coppola's mad plan for a 10-hour film of Goethe's Elective Affinities in 3-D; the ocean suicide attempt Hal "Captain Wacky" Ashby gave up when he couldn't find a swimsuit that pleased him; countless dalliances with porn stars; Russian roulette games and psychotherapy sessions in hot tubs. But he also soberly gives both sides ample chance to testify.

Easy Riders, Raging Bulls is also more than a fistful of dazzling anecdotes. Methodically, as thrillingly as a movie attorney, Biskind builds the case that Hollywood was revived by wild ones who then betrayed their own dreams, slit their own throats, and destroyed an art form by producing that mindless, inhuman modern behemoth, the blockbuster.

When Spielberg was making the first true blockbuster, Jaws, he sneaked Lucas in one day when nobody was around, got him to put his head in the shark's mechanical mouth, and closed the shark's mouth on him. The gizmo broke and got stuck, but the two young men somehow extricated Lucas's head and hightailed it like Tom and Huck. As Peter Biskind's scathing, funny, wise book demonstrates, they only thought they had escaped. --Tim Appelo

Review
Mark Harris Entertainment Weekly Peter Biskind's great, scathing, news-packed history...is one hell of an elixir -- salty with flavorsome gossip, sour with the aftertaste of misspent careers, intoxicating with one revelation after another,...an "A."

Dennis Drabelle The Washington Post Book World Biskind's devourable book is that rarity, a Hollywood expos that you can read mouth agape, slurping up scandal and titillation so fast you're in danger of choking -- without feeling ashamed of yourself.

Brian Gunn San Francisco Chronicle Biskind is a magician at prying revealing yarns and juicy quotes out of his subjects. And the resulting scenarios are deliciously tawdry...moments of real intelligence and grace.

Fascinating
By Charlie
This is a really long read but I'm mesmerized as this was my era and I enjoyed so many of the movies made from that time which was really a breakaway from old time Hollywood. Very fascinating to hear about the stories behind the Godfather, Jaws, Easy Rider and so many more!

Too easy and a lot of bull
By JLR
Good Lord, is this book overrated?

Peter Biskind's EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS is a perfect example on how NOT to write about movie history. In this case, it's the period between 1968-1980; a decade when directors like Spielberg, Scorsese, Altman and Coppola became powerful figures in the movie industry, releasing classics like "Jaws" (1975), "Taxi Driver" (1976), "Nashville" (1975) and "The Godfather" (1972). Biskind makes an effort to comprehend the entire decade in the span of 430-435 pages and fails miserably.

Throughout the entire book, Biskind makes one flawed argument after another, making generalizations about the state of movies by focusing on only a small section of what was released at the time. For instance, Biskind makes a romantic hyperbole that the movies of the 1970s became successful because audiences were part of the Cahiers du Cinema crowd that desired for watch tougher and more challenging fare. Wrong. As David A. Cook's terrific book, LOST ILLUSIONS, illustrates, the top stars of that decade were not method actors like Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman or Robert De Niro, but action heroes like Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone and Robert Redford. Some of the most successful movies of that decade were not artistic statements like "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" (1971) or "Amarcord" (1974), but movies that were either modeled after the exploitation circuit ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"; "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"; "The Omen"; "The Exorcist"), star-studded Hollywood epics ("Airport"; "The Poseidon Adventure"; "Earthquake"; "The Towering Inferno") or violent action movies ("The Godfather"; "Death Wish"; "Deliverance"; "Billy Jack"; "The Getaway"; the Dirty Harry and James Bond movies). Sensation, not artistry, was the rule, then as now. Moviegoers may admire De Niro for putting on 25-30 pounds but chances are they would rather watch Eastwood blow away bad guys than hear De Niro recite a line from "On the Waterfront" (1954).

When Biskind is not making generalizations, he irrationally points fingers at those that he feels were responsible for closing the door on European and artistically inclined American movies. In the last third of the book, Spielberg and George Lucas are vilified as the culprits that helped pave the way of the blockbuster mentality, but readers never get the sense that many of the top domestic hits of the early-to-mid 1970s were, in fact, disaster and Hollywood epics that were critically reviled and heavily promoted by studios; to speak little of the many lousy exploitation and horror movies that were generating revenue at the time. By the end of the book, Biskind asserts that American cinema is the worst state it has ever been, which means that despite the presence of American movies made by David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen Brothers, Lawrence Kasdan, Oliver Stone and John Sayles, American movies have sucked since "Star Wars". Lord.

And for a book that claims to be a comprehensive account on the 1970s, there is a truckload of errors all over the place. In one glaring example, Biskind writes that "up to 1975, no picture cost more than $15 million". Gee, I didn't know movies like "Ben-Hur" (1959), "Cleopatra" (1963), "War and Peace" (1966-1967) and "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) cost less than that. He wrongly asserts that before Warren Beatty, there was little to zero precedent for an actor to produce a picture (uh, hello? Charles Chaplin, anyone?). He writes that film critic Pauline Kael was a patron saint for New Hollywood directors, ignoring the fact that Kael disliked not only some of the American classics of the 1960s-1970s ("The Graduate", "Dirty Harry", "Coming Home", "Raging Bull", "Days of Heaven", "Apocalypse Now", "Barry Lyndon", "Deliverance", "The Sting", "American Graffiti", "Little Big Man", "Serpico", "Network", "A Clockwork Orange", "The Ballad of Cable Hogue", "Blazing Saddles", "Annie Hall"), but also movies that had a huge influence on 1970s directors such as "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), "8 1/2" (1962), "The Searchers" (1956), "Vertigo" (1958), "Dr. Strangelove" (1964), "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), "Last Year at Marienbad" (1961) and the movies made by Cassavetes, Antonioni and Ozu. And in one glaring oversight, Biskind scarcely mentions the careers of Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn and Brian De Palma, three directors that helped bring graphic violence to the mainstream movies.

But perhaps the book's greatest flaw, and one that will date this book in retrospect, is that Biskind reduces certain movies to a set of ideological symptoms, in that Biskind believes that the greatness and reason for movies' popularity is how they reflected the American politics of their time and the future. For example, Biskind writes that "The Godfather" hit a cultural nerve because it presented a premise that the American dream was an illusion and that Mafia provides better justice than the government. Nice try. No one who watched "The Godfather" at the time liked it due to the fact that it reflected the Nixon era. Serious moviegoers may study Gordon Willis' shadowy cinematography as a visual metaphor of corrupt America but virtually everyone else will clamor more on how Al Pacino blew that police officer's head off in the famous restaurant scene. Similarly, anyone who saw "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) in its initial release was more invigorated by the gory violence than the fact that it reflected counterculture sentiment.

And, my personal favorite, Biskind writes that movies like "The Godfather", "The Exorcist", "Jaws", "Star Wars" (1977) and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) somehow made the world safe for Reagan, although even a serious film scholar will wonder how in the world a gangster movie in 1972, a horror movie in 1973, a thriller in 1975 and two science-fiction movies in 1977, all made by liberal filmmakers, could have predicted the arrival of a right-wing administration in 1980?

It's one thing to say that Scorsese, Coppola and Altman made great movies (they did); it's another to say that movies were made during a time when audiences were on the side of the artists. That time has never existed. Before "Jaws", before "Star Wars", before "Rocky", audiences were flocking to see "Death Wish", "Billy Jack", "Airport", "Earthquake" and "Magnum Force". There's been good movies and bad movies and bad movies have always made more money than the good ones. This has always been the case before "Star Wars" and after "Star Wars". For every "Raging Bull" and "There Will Be Blood", there'll always be a ""Death Wish III" or "Transformers 2".

Anyone who wants a better overview of the 1970s American cinema is well-advised to pick up David Cook's LOST ILLUSIONS, which covers greater ground and is refreshingly free of the shallow writing found on this dreck. EASY RIDERS, on the other hand, should only be used as a doorstep or a fly swatter. Reading this book is strongly unadvised.

Strongest recommendation to avoid.

Fragile: The True Story of My Lifelong Battle Against Anorexia, by Nikki Grahame

Say the name Nikki Grahame and most people will remember the bubby, highly strung and hugely entertaining Big Brother 7 contestant, famous for her diary room outbursts. Since leaving the Big Brother house, she had forged a successful career for herself in presenting and writing. Yet Nikki isn't just another reality television contestant and her life story is not like any other you will ever read. From the age of eight until she was nineteen, Nikki battled anorexia nervosa—but few cases have been quite as extreme as hers. What she has been through while suffering from this illness might surprise you—it will definitely shock you. At just seven years old, Nikki began feeling that she was overweight. A remark about her being fat from a fellow pupil at a gymnastics class along with insecurity brought about by her parents' separation and he beloved grandfather's death, were the catalysts for Nikki's long-term eating disorder. Aged just eight and weighing just under three stone, she was diagnosed as anorexic. For the next eight years, Nikki was in and out of institutions—seven in total—during which time she attempted suicide twice and had to be sedated up to four times a day so that she could be force-fed. At one point, she was sedated for fourteen days while doctors sewed a tube into her stomach, through which she was fed in order to get her weight out of the critical range. Nikki admits that she knew every anorexic's trick in the book: from breaking into hospital kitchens to water down full-fat milk, altering her diet sheet and switching name tags on food to ensure that she received smaller amounts, to even stuffing a door-stop down her trousers before a weigh-in. The extremes that she went to in order to avoid eating and find ways to exercise excessively shocked doctors who have worked in the field for years. As Nikki says, “I've always wanted to be the best at everything I do, so I had to be the best anorexic—and I was.” This is the heart-rending and powerful story of a girl who lost her childhood but was brave enough to finally admit that she wanted to live again. With searing honesty, Nikki recounts her long and painful road to recovery, how she has had to come to terms with the long-term ramifications of her illness, how she coped with being in the Big Brother house and how she uses her new-found fame to promote awareness of eating disorders and to help those who are suffering from similar problems. This compelling book tells the story of an incredible journey.

About the Author
Nikki Grahame is the author of the book Fragile: The True Story of my Lifelong Battle with Anorexia. Between eight and nineteen years old, Nikki was in and out of hospitals and institutions as she battled with anorexia nervosa. At one point, her weight was so dangerously low that she went into a coma; one of the doctors treating her said that hers was the worst case of anorexia he had seen in 32 years. Although she will never be "cured" of the illness, Nikki made the decision that she wanted to live her life again and has not looked back since. Her time as a contestant in Big Brother 7 made her a household name and, since leaving the house, Nikki has established a career in the media. She has written columns for OK!, the Sun and More magazine and has been a presenter on Big Brother spin-off BBLB. Nikki devotes a lot of her spare time to increasing awareness of eating disorders and hopes that by sharing her life story, she will help others who fall victim.

Possibly the best book I've read on Anorexia
By Nicole Constant
The beginning was tough for me to get into, but that if normal of me for most books.
This book was incredibly detailed, and I must admit at times triggering.
I admire the strength of Nikki to bear her life in the hopes that it will help others struggling.
Nikki's been through hell and back and she is still fighting, it's admirable.
LOVE this book :)

One of the most comprehensive stories of anorexia I have ever read
By Amazon Customer
I am a previous sufferer of anorexia nervosa and this is an excellent account of one persons fight with the disorder. The story is so accurate in illustrating the total torture the anorexic mind set has on the individual. I couldn't put this book down.

Good read.
By A.M.K.
Good book, very matter of fact. Nicki is the perfect example of anorexia being the "bastard child of vanity and self loathing." At times it seems as though she is proud of how sick she got. Overall good, easy read.
