A marvel of a book

This large format (10X14") book is a marvel to view. The B&W photos are nicely printed and most are in either a full or double page format. Plate 26 is the very famous photo of a man jumping over, or rather into, a pool of water and about to touch it with his heel, which will connect his figure and its reflection, taken at Place de l'Europe, Paris in 1932. It is one of the earlier photos in this book and probably his best known one. The double page photo of a Gestapo informer being discovered is also remarkable. Most of the photos are accompanied by brief explanatory comments by Cartier-Bresson. There are photos from around the world and of Sartre, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, Matisse, Rouault, Bonnard and other famous artists and writers. Many of the photos are from India, Burma, Sumatra, Bali and other Asian countries, but also, of course, from the US and Paris. Even the photos that may have been posed, such as the one of Matisse and his model, seem spontaneous. It is a remarkable record of the twenty year period from 1932 to 1952 captured by one of the world's greatest documentary photographers, and all taken with only a small, manual Leica. The book was printed in France.

A way of seeing.

This is by far the most important book written about the creative process of photography. Cartier's thoughts are the crystallization of everything a photographer needs to know about the essence of the approach to making a meaningful image.

Wonderful book. I always wanted it.

This is one of three books I always wanted to have. I am sorry to say that the condition of the book was not as the dealer said.I have to put in a lot, at least as much, money as I paid for it to mend and fix the book.But on the other hand I got the book for a relatively good price.So whatever....But I think dealers should be more careful in describing the books. When I bought Nan Goldin:The ballad of sexual dependency I had to send it back.
