About the Author
Paul Langford has been Professor of Modern History, University of Oxford, since 1996; Fellow, and Tutor in Modern History, Lincoln College, since 1970; Chairman and Chief Executive, Arts and Humanities Research Board, since 1998. His publications include A Polite and Commercial People 1727-83 (1989)
and Public Life and the Propertied Englishman 1689-1789 (1991).

Not a Real "Brief History," but Essays on Aspects of History

I had heard a description of the "19th Century" volume in this series, and despite that reviewer's advice, decided to order this anyway. I now have to echo the comments I heard; this is not a "short history" of the period, but a collection of thematic essays that all relate to the period under discussion. (The Amazon listing does have a description of that sort; it's just that the title promises something more fundamental). The thematic essays include "contested kingdoms," "enlightenment and faith," "governing diverse societies," "the wealth of the nation," "the culture of improvement," and "contested empires"--all of these prefaced with a substantial introductory essay and followed by an epilogue.
Given the above, I wouldn't suggest looking to this book, or probably to any other volume in the series, for a concise, abbreviated, but orderly, sequential, and somewhat comprehensive, history of the period. You should probably have already acquired basic knowledge of what happened, and how those happenings resolved into discernible trends or cultural directions, or look elsewhere. There IS a useful, brief chronology of key events in the century (which perhaps would be better placed at the front of the book than in the back, where it is), but it certainly doesn't convey historic context or flow--which a purchaser of this book could well be seeking.
As for the essays, they appear to be aimed at the experienced historian or "advanced amateur," for whom the many summative and interpretive statements and references will be meaningful and assessable. From this reader's standpoint, most of the writing would have benefited from the services of an editor who could have midwifed a simpler approach (this means, "too academic in tone," though I am not pleading for a "dumbed-down" book).
For those who ARE historians or advanced lay-persons, this volume and others in this series may be enjoyable and thought-provoking--and certainly not limited to the kind of recitation and emphasis that a "short history" might provide. For those not claiming such grounding, however, it would probably be more satisfying to start elsewhere.
