About the Author
MARK KNEECE earned his M.A. from the University of South Carolina, and has been teaching at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) since 1993. He has created eight graphic novel adaptations of The Twilight Zone, and has published numerous graphic novels and comics, including work for Hellraiser, Verdilak, Alien Encounters, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, and The Spirit.

Great book for comic book writers!

I have a weakness for the SCAD books published by Watson-Guptill, they are usually beautifully laid out with a lot of useful information. This one is no exception. The writing is clear, concise and scholarly without being overly academic or dry. This book will help you structure your story and create the script in a technically correct format. I dabble in comic writing in my spare time and this book has already saved me time and headaches finessing my own story.

Lots of good general information

I bought this book simply looking for examples of comic script format but got a good general reference book instead. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of examples, way more than I anticipated but this is really a solid textbook and I would suggest it to anyone interested in comic writing.

The Art of Comic Book Writing - 4 Stars

A lot of concise information on scripting, writing, and pitching comics. It has a lot of good advise about crafting your comic and setting it up while covering pitfalls new writers make. Being able to look at comic scripts with notes of what is working and why and vise versa was good because that is never something anyone just sees from reading comics. Something, though, while I was reading kept making me feel that the information was too quick, that there was more to say on stuff yet it was a decently long book so I'm not sure what could have been missed. Also, this is just personal feelings but, I don't like the word "definitive" in the subtitle because no writing book ever has all the information you need which even the author said to keep working on and learning. Yet, this is a book I will be referencing as I work on my first comic script and would recommend to those interested in learning the craft.

About the Author

Jimmy combines his charisma, his innate ability to solve problems with found objects, and a wide variety of tools and techniques, with sweat and brute force. He has appeared on the Discovery Channel, HGTV, DIY, and FX Networks as a host and co-host.

About the Author
Patrick Modiano was born in the Boulogne-Billancourt suburb of Paris near the end of the Nazi occupation of France. He studied at the Lyc�e Henri-IV and the Sorbonne. As a teenager he took geometry lessons with the writer Raymond Queneau, who would play a key role in his development. He has written more than thirty works of fiction, including novels, children’s books, and the screenplay for Louis Malle’s film Lacombe, Lucien. In 2014, Modiano won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Chris Clarke was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, and lives and works in and around New York City. His published translations include work by Oulipo members Raymond Queneau and Olivier Salon. He currently teaches French and is translating a novel by Pierre Mac Orlan, which will be published in 2016.

Rich and Complex

This is the 14th book by Modiano that I've read, and I'll have to rate it as one of my favorites. As with many of his books it is about identity, memory, time, forgetting and escaping—and of course, Paris. I find it necessary to have my well worn Borsch laminated map of Paris on hand whenever I read Modiano. And now I will also recommend that Modiano fans also read his memoir, Pedigree, in order to fully comprehend where he is coming from, as much of what he writes is autobiographical, this book being no exception.
This novella is written in four chapters, each from the first person point of view of four different characters, all of whom have a connection to a 22 year old young woman known as Louki, a name given to her in a baptism or second birth by someone known as Tarzan, or was it Zacharias? The large cast of characters can be confusing. There is a cast of about two dozen of mixed nationalities and backgrounds, most of whom frequent the Caf� Cond�. They have interesting nicknames such as "the Jaguar", "the Captain", "Crossbones", and of course Louki. She is also known as Jacqueline Choureau nee Delanque, formerly of Montmartre 9th and 18th arrondissements, and currently of Montparnasse 6th and 14th arrondissements. She is reading Lost Horizon, which figures prominently in the action. Modiano uses the Caf� Cond� as a fixed point around which much of the action takes place.

The story starts with the narration of a young engineering student who is trying to fit in with the artsy crowd at Cond�. The action opens with a description of a roster of the Cond� habitu�s that is kept by fellow habitu� Bowing, the Captain. It catches the attention of a Mr. Pierre Caisley, who says he is an "art publisher". He seems to be interested in Louki, and anyone she hangs out with.

We find out in the second chapter that Mr. Caisley is not who he says he is, and the story starts to cascade and tumble from there. Action moves to multiple locations around Paris as Louki is looking for "neutral zones" that are places of safety, always trying to avoid the "black holes", or places of danger.

The third chapter is narrated by Louki, and she paints a very different picture of the events that we have witnessed so far. We learn about drugs and the role they play in the plot. In chapter 4, Roland, the aspiring writer steps forward. To me he is the personification of Modiano himself at age twenty. He identifies with Louki and her attempts to flee and hide, for he has had many of the same experiences. All four of the narrators come together in the final pages for a dramatic ending that I truly did not see coming.

It is a short book, but very rich and complex. I had to read it twice in order to catch all the details and nuance. Modiano is able to pack a lot into a very small package. I would rate this book at the same level as Missing Person (1978), Honeymoon (1990),and Dora Bruder (1997). The four books give the reader a span of work spreading more than 35 years and is a good starting point for anyone interested in Modiano.

Fun afternoon activity

I purchased this kit as a birthday gift for a 7-year-old girl. My daughter received a similar Klutz pom pom kit for Christmas. We had a lot of fun working together making puppies from that kit.

I flipped through the instruction book before I wrapped it. The pom pom making was exactly the same as the other kit. At the time, my 6-year-old daughter found the process a bit difficult. A little help from mom did the trick.

fun craft for tweens

Once girls start getting into the tween years it can start becoming more difficult to pick out gifts for them. Craft kits seem to always hit the spot though.

My daughter really is having fun with this pom-pom maker kit. It comes with enough yarn to make a few pom-pom monsters, and then you can use whatever yarn you already have at home or buy more yarn to make more. It comes with little accessories to put on the pom-pom monsters like eyes, sun glasses, bows, etc. There is a built-in ruler in the book to make it very easy to measure the string. It shows you ideaas to personize them and kids always come up with their own fun and silly ideas. My daughter has made two so far and they are really cute. She's had ideas like buying white yarn to make some snowmen, and things like that. It's a fun and creative outlet for girls. Younger kids could do this too with just a little help needed by an adult.

So much fun it's scary!

I bought this for my 5-year-old for Christmas, and it is just the cleverest thing ever! I had been looking for a basic pom-pom making kit, but this is so much better because the fun is just starting after the pom-pom is made. The best part is the oh-so-cute bows, teeth/tongues, googly eyes and paper punch-out accessories (shoes, crowns, horns) that make your pom-pom into a unique little creature. The only downside I see is that there is only enough yarn to make 5 pom-pom monsters. That is easily and cheaply replaced, but once the accessories are gone basic pom-pom making may lose its appeal. That said, while supplies last, this kit couldn't be a bigger hit. I would buy it all over again, and highly recommend it for your little crafter .... boy or girl!

Biography of Pope Benedict

The author has done an excellent work on the life of Pope Benedict. He has lived in Bavaria himself, and done extensive studies, and yet has come out with a touchingly simple and direct examination of the life of this great human being.

I have family in Bavaria and have visited on several occasions, and the author has caught the true spirit of the region and it's effect upon the birth and upbringiing of Pope Benedict. The intellectual brilliance as well as the simplicity of the man comes through. I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy reading this book and recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the culture and religious background of Joseph Ratzinger who became Pope Benedict xvi.

The book was great. Enjoyed the geography of Bavaria and life story of Pope Benedict. Interesting facts the Media doesn't expose or has taken out of context explained about events in his life.
A quick read and some photos to go along. I only wished it included a map of Germany. If your traveling Southern Germany, great places to visit mentioned.

precise, modern treatment of stochastic analysis

The book arises from lectures at UNC-CH in a two-semester course on stochastic models. The author has exceptional precision and
organization in the classroom, and this comes through in the book. Great book for teaching
from, as well as learning from.

This book also takes a step which more venerable texts, such as the Trivedi book or the Ross series
could not -- it has computational excercises suitable for math packages like Mathematica. Thus,
the student can be introduced to scientific computer literacy as well as stochastic processes.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching today's student, or for preparing themselves
for challenges in Operations Research. The book would make an above-average reference as well.

An average book

I used this book in a graduate course on Stochastic processes. The book would rate as average or just above that as I found it to be insufficient for a start in the subject unless you were in a classroom course. It does assume some background in probabilty. Also, the explanations, while complete, are not as easy to understand as the Roos book. I also found that the examples were extremely easy as compared to the excersice problems. THis makes it tougher to 'extrapolate' and understand. It has one nice feature though- solutions to half the problems are there at the end of the book making it better for students while giving faculty leeway too. The excercises are quite comprehensive too. I'd say this is an excellent book for someone with some prior knowlede of Stochastic Processes. For a beginner, this may not be the best start.

Strictly fair text

This text book isn't great but it isn't awful either. There are numerous typos and mistakes in the book. The author has a list of errata on his webpage that is 7 pages long and that is only a partial list. The explaination in the book is okay and the exercises are pretty good. If you have a choice I recommend using the text by Ross for learning the material or Karlin and Taylor for reference.

Over the last 20 years, Santiago Calatrava has made literally thousands of drawings and paintings and more than a hundred sculptures. Many of his drawings show the human body - often in motion - alone, or in groups, or in an architectural context. Others show preliminary ideas which lead to constructions, details, sculptures, and buildings.

This book contains a selection of over 200 drawings, water colours and depictions of sculptures, chosen by the architect and the author because they are particularly well-suited to showing the significance of his artistic work as the basis for his architectural designs. A drawing is always the starting point for an entire laboratory of ideas. Many of the themes and forms which Calatrava investigates and develops on this level are subsequently transformed into sculptures and go on to provide the inspiration for his bridges, railway stations, airports, museums and even dining tables.

This volume analyses how Calatrava's creative ideas ripen and develop, from the initial drawings, to the sculptures, finally attaining completion in the realised buildings. At the same time, it examines the interfaces between the fine arts, engineering and architecture.

Disappointing

Being a designer myself, I am very much interested in the thought process and preliminary drawings made by one of the great recent names in the field. I was definitely looking for inspirational drawings and to peer over the shoulder of a great in a similar field to see their process.

What I found instead was the disappointingly simple marks of a pretty amateur water colourist. I'm sure that this might be inspirational and interesting to people outside of visual arts and design, but compared to Arkitekture by Zaha Hadid, which has beautiful 3d renderings, models, pictures of her abstract scultptural work etc, it's woefully inadequate.

I won't be buying another book on his work without seeing it in the flesh and getting a good idea of what's really in there.
